THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT Published Every Evening Except Sunday by THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO . INC. Wintered at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller, Jr. —President Mrs. John Shirk Vice President Mrs. A. R. Holthouse Secretary Chas. E. Holthouse Treasurer Right or .Privilege? There is a lot of talk about “our rights” — and most of it should be stated, “our wants.” It seems that many people are confused and think they have a “right” to anything they want badly enough. This just isn’t true. Our “rights” are generally those protected the Constitution and the Bills of Rights. Freedom of religion, speech, press, from unreasonable search or seizure, from billeting troops in time of peace — these are rights. They are guaranteed to us, and no law, no court, no group can take them away — as long as we stand up for them. But we have no “right” to be fanatical, stubborn, mad, etc., guaranteed either by the constitution or by the law. These are privileges, and dearly won privileges. By that, we mean if you insist on the privilege, it is likely that someone else a little more powerful will take the same privilege. It just seems that doing unto others as you would . have them do unto you is very good advice — the kind that should be taken, not given. Today we received a bushel of propaganda from Alabama racist and hatemonger George C. Wallace. Hatemonger Wallace claims that he wants to protect our “rights” to trample on fellow human beings, turn dogs on them, etc., as he has done in Alabama. Indiana citizens are already protected by civil rights legislation more strigent than any pro“rights”. What we need are for people like him posed — so we need none of Racist Wallace’s to stay at home and foment their own trouble. If they want their neighbors to hate, club, kill, and trample each other, let them. We are happy here in Indiana without any of racist Wallace’s ideas. Let him take them back to his own state, and keep them there. If his people like him, fine — we don’t need him. Lyndon Johnson, a gentleman, a conservative Democrat with .every American in mind, is our choice for president. Let’s help him! Editorial written by Dick Heller

O O The People’s Voice Hus column is for the use of our readers who wish to make suggestions (or the general good or discuss questions of interest. No articles will be published without signature of the author. 0 O What? A Recreation Area in Decatur? You’re kidding us! No, we’re not kidding you about a recreation area? You still don’t believe us? Open your eyes. "What is there to see?’’ you ask. Look again, don’t you see all of that land going to waste? Now do you see how a recreation area is possible in this growing community? We of Rotary Troop 61 believe that .ve will succeed in convincing you of this fact. If we have not yet succeeded with you, please come and see our exhibits at the Scout-O-Rama, Saturday, April 25, in the afternoon. Our troop will sponsor two exhibits. Our troop’s history will be one exhibit. The other will consist of two models of the recreation area. The first model will show the present view of the area. The second model will show the area as it would look if it were fixed up and had tennis and basketball courts, fishing, camping etc. Incidentally, this area is south of the Highway Trailer Court, north of the Tractor sales, east of highway 27, and west of the Pennsylvania railroad.
