Lodge Is Winner In New Jersey Write-in NEWARK, N.J. (UPII — U.S. Ambassador to South Viet Nam Henry Cabot Lodge emerged with a write-in triumph today in a primary election which saw voters select New Jersey’s first Negro candidate for congressional office. Latest returns gave Lodge 1,398 write-ins and Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, R-Ariz., 853, with 841 for former Vice President Richard M. Nixon. New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller had 148 votes. Pennsylvania Gov. William W. Scranton picked up 176 votes and segregationist Gov. George Wallace of Alabama had 230 votes from both Republican and Democratic voters. President Johnson got 747 write-ins. Although Lodge held the lead for most of the night, it seesawed at times between Lodge and Goldwater, and shortly after midnight Goldwater was ahead 4>f Lodge, 449 to 427. However, most political observers regarded the write-in votes throughout the state to be too small to be significant. There were no presidential contenders on the ballot, but 20 of the state’s 21 counties provided space for write-ins in the primary which brought out a light turnout, partially because of poor weather. Interest was centered in Newark’s 11th District, where auto dealer William Stubbs emerged as the state’s first Negro candidate for congressional office. He will oppose incumbent Democrat Joseph G. Minish in November’s general election. Incumbent Democrat Harrison A. Williams Jr. and Republican Bernard M. Shanley of Bernardsville, one-time aide to former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, were unopposed for their party nominations for the U.S. Senate.
Compares Alabama To 'Police State' GARY, Ind. (UPD—Governor Welsh, continuing his personal attack on Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace, his opponent in the May 5 Indiana Democratic presidential primary, Tuesday night compared Alabama to a “police state” wjjgre ‘‘scores of thousands of colored voters ate denied their most precious right.” Welsh, running against Wallace in the Hoosier primary as a favorite son stand-in for President Johnson, made the charge at a Ist District Democratic meeting here. “On the one hand, we’re told the Negro schools down there (Alabama) are excellent and in the same breath we are told that thousands upon thousands of Negro• graduates of those same schools are illiterate and can not be allowed to vote,” Welsh said. “The truth is simply this,” he said. “There are no states’ rights, there are no property rights, where the basic rights of human beings are denied. There is simply a police state ruled by the iron fist of would-be dictators whose greatest fear is that their lust for power will be checked by the other members of the federal union.” Welsh said, “Each year, even as the Poles and, Czechs and East Germans risk death to flee to a better life in the West, so are thousands of Negro and white families moving north to escape this modern tyranny. “They are not fleeing the good life. They are seeking the good life and we welcome them to Indiana where they may secure their rights and pursue their fortune without fear,” Welsh said. He said that the issue’ of states’ rights “has been carried to absurd extremes by individuals and groups who need a popular cause to hide their real aims.’’ Indianapolis Livestock INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—Livestock: Hogs 5,900; barrows and gilts steady to 25 lower; 1 and 2, 190225 lb scarce, 15.25-15.50; 1 to 3, 190-220 lb 14.75-15.25 ; 220-240 lb 14.25- sows steady to 25 lower; 1 to 3, 320-400 lb 13.00133.25 ; 2 and 3 . 400-600 lb 12.0012.75;' several lots 13.00. Great Britain And Russia In Swap Os Spies LONDON (UPD — British businessman Greville Wynne, imprisoned as a spy by the Soviets and exchanged this morning in Berlin for Soviet spy Gordon Lonsdale, returned to Britain today. Wynne’s wife, Sheila, who made several trips to Russia to see her husband and plead for his release, said "This is wonderful news. I am ecstatic,” when tpld he was freed. (Diplomatic observers in Moscow said the deal was a favorable one for Moscow since it freed a master Soviet spy sentenced to 25 years in exchange for a Briton accused of a relatively minor role and sentenced to eight years' confinement. (They said that Wynne was accused only of being a courier, while Lonsdale headed a ring stealing important British military secrets.' The British Foreign Office announced the exchange several hours after witnesses reported it took place on the Berlin border at dawn. The initiative for the swap came from the Soviets, the British spokesman said, and the British agreed because of Wynne’s poor health. Corning Plan! Seems Assured To Bluffton INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—lndiana was virtually assured a new multi-million dollar glass works today when one of two utilities competing for the right to serve the proposed plant with natural gas withdrew its application for a certificate of authority. Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. withdrew its application to an area near Bluffton where Corning Glass Works tentatively plans to construct a new plant. This left Northern Indiana Public Service Co. the only utility seeking authority to serve the firm with gas. The Public Service Commission said the decision by Panhandle “will make it possible for the commission to resolve promptly the problems of It natural gas supply to this area remove a barrier to the construction of a new plant.” “While we do not pass judgment on the merits of the competing franchise applications which were before us, we must commend the management of Panhandle for its public-spirited decision in the interests of the economic growth of Indiana.” “Panhandle’s wit hd r aw al eliminates what appeared to .be extended litigation. Such Bastion would have meant delay in Corning officials have advised us on the record that a gas supply was essential to their decision,” the PSC said. The motion /to dismiss and withdraw was filed this morning when a hearing resumed which was recessed last week in the PSC’s effort to solve the service dispute.
