Gives Warning On Keeping Animals Jack Hurst. Adams county conservation officer, warned county residents today about taking home animals that they may •find.” The Indiana department of conservation, division of fish and game, again is receiving many requests for information on the care and feeding of voung birds and animals, and also permits to keep them. Hurst explained, however, that in many cases these wildlife babies are not as helpless as many people believe; in most cases the mother is not far away. In the event that something has happened to the parents of the animal, the young are equipped by nature with unusual powers to take care of themselves. Lose Ability Hurst said that another thing most people who want to help ’’found” babies do ‘not realize that when they are kept in captivity for a short length of time, they lost their ability for self preservation which all are endowed with at birth. Usually, when the animal grows older, the “finder” realizes what poor pets they make. In most cases, when they are returned to the wild, they are unable to fend for themselves. No Permits Pet permits cannot be issued to persons for birds or animals that have been acquired during the closed seasons, and persons having these babies in their possession are in violation of the Detroit Lions Oninlnn From Eaoles DETROIT (UPI) — Defensive end Bill Quinlan was obtained by the Detroit Lions on waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles today. fish and game laws The law provides for no less than a $lO fine for such a violation, so persons are advised to follow the words of wildlife biologists who say that upon finding a young animal, "leave it alone. Another reason for avoiding young or injured animals is the rabies disease, according to the local conservation officer. Nearly all warm-blooded ani mals may contract the disease. Modern dog rabies inoculation practices have made the disease much less common among dogs, but today it is frequently found in wild animals such as raccoons, mice, chipmucks, skunks, foxes, etc. Bats are also included in this group, Hurst said. Rabies or hydrophobia can be transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected bat. During the past six years, bat rabies have been confirmed in nearly half of the states, and not just in the rural areas. Stay Away Hurst advises that any bat lying on the ground unable to fly well or flying in the daytime is abnormal, and shouldn’t be
