Harold E. Stassen Have You Considered Stassen? If you plan to vote in the Republican primary, there will only be one race (unless you live in the one delegate district where Red Lankenau and Cal E. Peterson are candidates), and that race is for nomination for the presidency. Whoever wins the Indiana Republican primary will get the state’s votes on the first ballot — all 82 of them. There are four Republican candidates, but only two are serious — Goldwater and Stassen. Many very sincere Republicans do not want Goldwater for their candidate, for one reason or another. But many of these have not seriously considered Stassen, either? Stassen served three terms as governor of Minnesota, no small accomplishment. His opening statement for his Indiana campaign was “Building for Peace at home and abroad is the program which I present to the voters of Indiana from the primary on May 5.” This is a far cry from the negative attitude of Sen. Goldwater, and his drum-thumping, war-cry tactics for sending the Marines into Cuba to turn on the water. Stassen, if elected, would not sit by idly and let America deteriorate. If a depression, struck, he would act, not wait around. Stassen served the Eisenhower administration on the national security council, and helped build our powerful American defense, and served on Ike’s operations coordinating board, to defeat Communist moves, and as Ike’s special assistant for the summit meeting, and other important international negotiations. Former appellate court judge Donald E. Bowen is state campaign manager for Stassen; Bowen was Indiana chairman of the volunteers for Nixon and Lodge in 1960. So, if you are a Republican, and if you are convinced that Sen. Barry Goldwater should not be nominated, we urge you to vote in Republican primary May 5 for Harqld E. Stassen.
