Newspaper Circulation Increases N. W. Ayer & Son’s directory of newspapers and periodicals reports that the circulation of evening newspapers increased by 225,495, to a circulation of 35,130,684 in 1963. The 1,473 evening newspapers in the United States reach daily into nearly every home, because they are wanted for their news and advertising content. People know that their newspapers keep them informed of tax changes, of proposed laws, ordinances, and other matters affecting them, of news events, deaths, marriages, births, and many, many other things of interest, in a written form, so that they can be referred to again, or kept for their memory value. The Decatur Daily Democrat, for mon than 59 years a daily, and publishing continually for * mere 197 years in Decatur, strives to give you the best news coverage possible in the limited time available between editions. * But as Benjamin Franklin, himself a newspaperman, once said, if printers waited until they could verify every detail, very little would ever be printed. Sometimes we just have to give you the chaff with the grain, and let time sift them apart. The Decatur Daily Democrat does have a reputation for local coverage,, one second to none among small newspapers in Indiana. A recent survey of its news coverage showed that it included about 3V 2 times as much local news as the average Indiana small-town daily. People who have lived all of their lives in large cities do not always understand why so many local events are “front page news.” In large cities, for example, deaths occupy a small part of a page, and are greatly condensed. But in a small city like Decatur, they are usually, if received promptly, placed on the front page. If you have a family member die elsewhere than Decatur, we would appreciate it if you would call and tell us, so that we can give it timely coverage. The managing editor, Pete Reynolds, reserves the right, of course, to locate every story, give it its heading, and decide what page it gets. Some days, he says, he would like to number every page “1”, so everyone would be satisfied! - Editorial written by Dick Heller

The Smalls and three stepchildren escaped with injuries and were hospitalized in fair condition. The dead were identified as Betty Small, 12, and Melvin Small, 5.
