Barbershoppers To Hold 'Open House’ Eddie Ewell, president of the Adams county chapter of the 5.P.E.8.5.Q.5.A., (society 1 for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America,) announced plans today for a big open-house type meeting to be held next week in Decatur in observance of "Harmony Week.” The 35 members of the local chapter are joining some 30,000 other men in North America to celebrate the founding of the society. “It’s the 26th anniversary of our society,” explained Ewell, “and there will be over 600 chapters holding special meetings during the week to commemorate our anniversary and sing ‘the Old Songs.’ The open-house will be held at the Youth and Community Center Thursday evening, April 16 beginning at 8 o’clock. “We will sing up a storm at that time,” Ewell promised. Everyone Invited Everyone, including non-mem-bers and the ladies, are invited and urged to attend by the local chapter. There will be audience participation and a light luncheon will be served —and there is no charge. The county chapter of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. is looking for new members to make the organization grow. There are four voice classings, tenor, lead, baritone and bass. “You don’t have to read music, or play an instrument,” Ewell exclaimed. “All you really need is a desire to sing.” The local chapter is part of a 30,000 member singing fraternity devoted exclusively to men who want to sing four-part barbershop harmony. , Founded in 1938 S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. was founded by Owen C. Cash in Tulsa, Okla., April 11, 1938. Twenty-six men attended the first meeting, and at present, the society is probably the largest all-male singing organization in the world. There are nearly 675 chapters of the organization in the United States and Canada, with 15 geographical districts. The largest chapter is in Dundalk, Md., where 197 men belong to the chapter.
