Girard & Sons Warehouse Auction 209 N. 12th St. Phone 3-4591.74 6t New Type Auction Sales Held Here A relatively new type of auction, the consignment auction, is now being conducted regularly in Decatur, Jay Girard, of Girard & Sons, announced today. People who have good, usable items which they wish to sell, but do not wish to advertise separately for sale,' as through a want ad, may bring them to a consignment sale. “Suppose you have a good usable chair, table, electric tool or appliance. You may bring it to the auction place, and receive a receipt, with a lot number, for your items. “This number is entered in a ledger account, together with the price it brings at auction. If your chair sells for $lO, a consignment auctioneer usually retains from 15-25% of the sale price; the balance is mailed to the seller. Girard charges 20% at the sales he runs, so you would receive $8 by mail for the chair.” Chicago Produce CHICAGO (UPD—Produce: Live poultry special fed White Rock fryers 19-20; roasters 2426. Few Schools Offer Vocational Courses INDIANAPOLIS (UPD-Gov- ? ernor Welsh told a group of educators here Tuesday night that only 10 per cent of Indiana high schools offer any vocational training and much of what is offered is not geared to modern needs. Welsh spoke at the first of three vocational education con- < ferences he has called. The others will be held April 14 and April 23. They will deal with other aspects of providing high school level training for students who do not plan to attend college. “Perhaps the major single aspect of education in which community after community and the state as a whole fall short* is in recognition that public school students need a higher level of training and skills than ever before if they are to qualify for jobs when they are graduated,” Welsh told the 400 persons attending the first conference. He said that present vocational education programs are geared to “the skills required 20, 30 and even more years ago.” Citing South Carolina’s program for training young people in modern skills, Welsh urged that Hoosiers establish such a program and warned that not to do so would be more expensive than the program. “Untrained, uneducated young people become our nearly permanently unemployed and the heads of the welfare families of the future ... the cost in terms of taxes will be far greater during their lifetimes as unemployables and community social problems than if the investment of public money had been made in their training,” Welsh said. Other speakers at the conference included Luke White, Covington, a member of the State Board of Education and a candidate for the Democratic nomination to succeed Welsh, and .Chicago School Supt Benjamin Willis. Marshall, a Chicago underworld figure also known as Marshall Caifano, was sentenced to consecutive 10-year terms on charges of conspiracy and interstate travel with Intent to commit extortion. DelMonico was given concurrent five-year terms on the same two counts. The two were convicted Feb. 7 in federal court here. A third defendant won a directed verdict of acquittal.
