Spring Storm Pushing Into • 1 Midwest Area By United Press International ■ t A spring storm which left up ! to 5 feet of snow in the Rockies ■ and floods in California pushed into the Midwest today, glazing highways from Oklahoma to Illinois, bringing heavy snow warnings to four states and sending thunderstorms grumbling into the Ohio Valley. Hazardous driving warnings were up in sections of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Heavy snow warnings were posted for parts of Kansas. Nebraska, lowa and Missouri. Up to 2 inches of rain was forecast for flood - sodden southern Indiana. Snow fell as far east as Michigan and there were thunder- • storms deep into Dixie. Chicago got an inch of rain. Kansas City measured hail stones the size of golf balls. Michigan’s rain and snow helped ease the forest fire danger. A blaze near the state capital of Lansing Tuesday charred 600 acres of grassland. But the snow produced misery in Colorado, where an avalanche caused a temporary closing of a mile-long segment of highway in Wolf Creek Pass. At 'least three traffic deaths were blamed on the snow. The blizzard-like storm cut Visibility to half a mile in parts of Nebraska and lowa. Cheyenne, Wyo., and Goodland, Kan., each collected 2 inches of snow in six hours. Behind the cold front, stretching from Texas to New England, temperatures dropped sharply—2o degrees in an hour in parts of Texas. The Texas Panhandle had readings 12 degrees below freezing. It was 20 below zero at Willston, N.D., early in the day and 10 below at Billings, Mont. The temperature dropped near zero in parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado, and below in sections of Minnesota.
