Spring Has Sprung? About 9:10 a.m. this morning Spring officially made its entrance in Decatur, but you could hardly tell it from the weather! Decatur people are already thinking about Spring and Summer, though. Fix up, clean up, paint up — that’s the order of the day! Spring winds blow trash all over the neighborhood, and every bush or shrub has stopped a few. Yards will look a lot better after a few warm days allow the gardener to get out and spruce up the looks of things. It was interesting to note that the planning engineer, Harry Sheridan, felt that improved homes had so changed two areas that be recommends up-zoning them. This speaks especially well for the people of Decatur. A little effort makes a big difference. Grass seed for the lawn, poison for the weeds, and bugs, or a little hard work in pulling weeds and killing bugs, are other thoughts we get this time of year. All the junk that has gathered in the basement through the winter — it goes out to the trash dump now. Garages are cleaned out — everything will look better by Easter! One of the saddest things this spring — to install the new elevator in the court house, it has been necessary to move vehicles into the court house yard. This in turn has damaged the lawn and shrubs. The commissioners ,for the past five years or so have concentrated in beautifying the court house lawn and it has really responded. It no longer had any bare patches, or large circles of weeds. Oh, well — when the elevator is finished this summer, it will be possible to work on the yard again! Now is a good time to think about cleaning up that empty lot, or clearing old out-buildings off your lots. Property values, for resale, are always better if all the homes in the neighborhood look better. But don’t complain If your neighbor hasn’t done his part yet—just take care of your own property — his time will come! Spring is the season of re-birth, of change and transformation. Most primitive cultures in areas where there was a true spring each year had a festival which in their eyes encouraged the Gods to bring on another year’s crops and meadows. To them, each spring was a separate miracle of their Gods. We may no longer think of it as a special miracle, since it occurs without direct intervention, but understanding the process of Spring is even more of a miracle than the idea of direct intervention by the Gods!
