that “the real interest of Cambodia is not to have the North Vietnamese at our door. . we do fear South Viet Nam, but we fear North Viet Nam much more." This week, whatever his fears, Sihanouk by his own words was contemplating diplomatic recognition of Communist North Viet Nam. It was typical of Sihanouk’s diplomatic gyrations that a few minutes later he also was talking of renewed contact with South Viet Nam. But the facts are that since November Sihanouk has been moving ostensibly neutral Cambodia steadily closer to the Communist orbit. Complicate U.S. Objectives Carried to their logical con-
clusion these actions vastly could complicate U.S. objectives in both neighboring Laos and South Viet Nam. They are a reflection of Sihanouk’s seeming conviction that U.S. efforts in South Viet Nam already are doomed, and of his almost hysterical belief that his borders are threatened both by South Viet Nam and by Thailand. It was last Nov. 19 that Sihanouk announced he was rejecting approximately S3O million a year in U.S. economic and rrfilitary aid on charges that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency was plotting his ouster. More recently he has accused the United States of joining with South Viet Nam and Thailand in a plot to partition Cambodia and rejected a U.S. proposal t hat Cambodia set up joint commissions to demarcate disputed borders. Turns to Red China Last week, as anti-American mobs sacked both the United States’ and British embassies in the Cambodian capital of Pnom Phen, Sihanouk announced he would turn to Communist China for guarantees of Cambodian neutrality and to Communist North Viet Nam and the Communist-led Pathet Lao of Laos for guarantees of his borders. The Pathet Lao and the Communist North Vietnamese, he said, were the “future masters of Viet Nam and Laos.” The puzzlement was that North Viet 'Nam has no common border with Cambodia which does border on South Viet Nam, Laos and Thailand. His announcement, therefore, suggested that by recognizing the Hanoi government of North Viet Nam he also was recognizing it as the capital of all Viet Nam. New Supply Routes And, while Sihanouk insisted that Cambodia would remain “strictly neutral and nonFAT OVERWEIGHT Available to you without a doctor’s prescription, the GALAXON plan. engaged” between the Communist and non-Communist worlds, he aroused natural suspicions that the Communists thus would find new supply routes to their forces in South Viet Nam. Sihanouk's recognition of Pathet Lao forces, further, -would render much more difficult Western hopes for maintaining a neutral regime there. Altogether, these have been trying days for U.S. policies in Southeast Asia. Significantly, Sihanouk did not include France in the “hostile free world,” a happy circumstance for President Charles de Gaulle’s intentions of re-establishing French influence in Southeast Asia. Happily also for Red China which has endorsed , Cambodia’s “just patriotic Struggle” against the “imperialist United States.” CIVIL WAR (Continued from Page One) Catholic won second prize among the juniors for her essay “A Century of Negro Progress.” Sixteen prizes of $1 each were awarded to the following for their essays: Seventh grade — Lois Counterman. Jack Ruby Reported To Have Fired Belli DALLAS (UPI) — Convicted killer Jack Ruby was reported Wednesday night to have fired Melvin Belli as his defense lawyer because of statements made by the San Francisco attorney blasting Dallas and the jury that condemned Ruby to the electric chair. Belli, visiting in Mexico City on his way home to California, said “I haven’t heard anything about it.” “I’ll be in San Francisco tomorrow, and I'll talk about it then,” he said. The Dallas News said Eva Grant, Ruby’s sister, told them she mailed a letter to Belli's office in California, firing Belli. Ruby’s sister said the Ruby family was dissatisfied with Belli’s defense presentation and shocked at the tirade he let loose against Dallas at the end of the trial, The News said the letter out* lined the family’s chagrin at criticism they felt was aimed at “promoting only Belli’s personal fame.” “My brother has been disturbed and upset by reports of Mr. Belli’s actions both in and out of court,” the News quoted Ruby’s brother, Hyman, of Chicago, as saying. “The opinions this man expressed about Dallas, the jury, judge Joe Brown and (Dist. Atty.) Henry Wade are not shared by Jack or any member of his family,” Hyman told the paper. The letter said the family did not know what to do about further counsel, “but God willing we will get help somehow. We will pray for help and hope that Mr. Belli will do likewise.” Hockey Results National League W LT Pts. Five Added To Indiana's Net Hall Os Fame INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Wednesday night inducted five new members, including three coaches whose teams won a total of eight state high school championships. New members are Marion Crawley, the late Glenn Curtis, Haldane Griggs, Murray Mendenhall and Jewell Young. Mrs. Curtis, who flew here from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., accepted the award for her husband while the others were honored in person at the annual banquet. The selection was announced by Jep Cadou Jr., sports editor of The Indianapolis Star and this year’s Hall of Fame director. The third annual Silver Medal award for outstanding contributions to high school basketball went to Butler University coach and athletic director Tony Hinkle. The banquet also honored the Silver Anniversary team —10 former high school stars of 25 years ago. Crawley, a prep basketball coach in Indiana for 32 years, won two consecutive state titles at Washington in the early 1940 s and won another at Lafayette in 1948. His Lafayette team is one of Saturday’s four finalists in this year’s tourney. Curtis, who died in 1958, won one state title at Lebanon in 1918 and three more at Martinsville between 1924 and 1933. He later became head coach and athletic director at Indiana State College, coached pro basketball and returned to Martinsville as school superintendent. Mendenhall coached for 22 years at Fort Wayne Central and his 1943 team won the state title. He also became a pro 1 coach and later coached at Indi- : ana Technical College, Fort ! Wayne. He now operates a farm near Antwerp, Ohio. Griggs, a native of Toronto, Ont., grew up in Indianapolis and was a member of Butler’s nationally prominent basketball
teams in the 19205. He now lives in Long Beach, Calif. Young, one of Purdue’s alltime greats, twice led the Big Ten in scoring and was voted the Boilermakers’ outstanding athlete in 1938.
