Cedar-Lining a Closet Bacomes Easy Week-end Project for Dad
One of the easiest home improvement projects for Dad is lining a closet with aromatic red cedar. This is an ideal weekend project, and it provides mothrepellent storage space for less than it woult cost to replace a . coat ruined by moths. The whole project can be done in several hours because the pieces of red cedar are nailed right over the walls, ceiling and floor Tongue and groove edges and sides simplify the fittings of the pieces. Joints need not occur over studs, since the tongue and groove design forms a strong ’weld."

Why use a bedroom only onethird of every day? It can be a hobby center for an adult or child, too. “A bedroom’s an excelllent place for a quiet hobby such as stamp or coin collecting, sewing, or drawing and similar sparetime activities,” suggests John Concord of the Home Service Bureau. for studying, reading or writ- “ Also, it readily may be used ing — even when someone is asleep. Trout, manager of tiT Sherwin-Wil-liams branch at 222 North Second Street, who is Introducing five new wall paint and enamel colors. The “Whispering’’ colors are three pastels named Morning .Sun. Juniper and Firefly. The “shouting " shades are two accent colors': Italian Olive and Bonfire. “The pastel colors are subtly quiet tints designed to provide an interesting, yet unobtrusive background for home furnishings,” Trout explained. “Morning Sun is a pale that goes well With greens and browns. Jumper is a soft grayed-green that fits beautifully into today’s smart blue-green color combinations. Firefly, a lich yellow with smoky undertones,,.ls a perfect companion for the highly popular gold and bronze tones. “The accent shades are much more insistent colors." the local businessman said. “They provide decorative exclamation points in rooms of quiet decor. Italian Olive is a deep, bronzy green. Bonfire is a brilliant, penetrating orange.” Twenty-dne variations of the five new colors are also available.- The ■ variations are made by tinting the. orilpnal colors.- This is done in the store with a color tinting machine that can produce more than a thousand colors in wall paint and enamel. - - The Sherwin-Williams Co. Your living room doesn’t have a particular function. It can be just a sitting room or a distinctively different room reRemodeling Old Kitchen Takes Care Kitchen remodeling, one of the most popular home improvement projects, requirts careful planning if the greatest possible benefit is to be realized from the dollars spent. A badly arranged kitchen, no matter how costly, may mean many extra steps a day for the homemaker, plus the annoyance of having the family traipsing through her busiest work area. It is advisable to get expert advice on kitchen design before any work is done. Many electric utilities have a free kitchen planning service. Again, a brand new kitchen that’s perfectly designed for efficiency will be far from fully efficient if the old appliances are retained. This is false economy for several reasons, the principal one being that new automatic electric appliances do their work far better than older ones-even though the older ones may still work well. New electric appliances also look better. An outdated, “roundshouldered” range, for instance, that doesn’t fit flush with sleek new cabinets is an eye-sore. New electric ranges provide great flexibility of kitchen design. With at least six basic styles to choose from, each with a variety of sizes, features, and finishes, the kitchen planner has much more leeway in both kitchen arrangement and decor. The homemaker can choose exactly the cooking features that suit her needs and she can have ovens, cooking elements and controls at the right height for her. One of the most enjoyable features of a new kitchen is its clean appearance and the ease with which it can be kept clean. Built-in electric appliances can be included in an F|IA loan for kitchen remodeling. Envy-Green Families Turn Pleasure-Pink In New Kitchens * Green is the color of apartment dwellers when they see their home - owning friends’ modern kitchens. Apartment buildings—at least the older ones-are notorious for their outdated kitchen appliances. But FHA, recognizing that more and more families are becoming permanent apartment dwellers, has now made it possible for them to have up-to-date kitchens with modern built-in electric appliances. Until recently, FHA Title I loans for built-in kitchen appliances such as electric ranges were limited to single-family homes. The regulation was amended recently to make such loans available for buildings with two or more kitchens if the borrower and the dealer or contractor certify that the improvements, installation, alterations and repairs conform with all applicable building codes and zoning regulations.
fleeting your particular interests and designed especially for your use. When space or finances don’t permit you to have a special room for your hobby or favorite pasttime, take a second look at your living room. It can meet any of these needs — and more. “Even if you use your living room primarily for entertaining, it still can double as a hobby center,” according to Ralph Sherwin, chief designer of Lib-by-Owens-Ford Glass Company. “Use your imagination in design and decoration. There are an infinite number of ways to keep your living room beautiful and functional — yet different,” he said. FOR EXAMPLE, you can use a living room wall or corner for your hobby area. A desk or table and comfortable chair placed near a window can be the foundation for this section, providing you with plenty of work space and ample light for close work. Shelves on an adjoining interior wall will give plenty of storage space for albums, while desk drawers provide space for hobby tools and accessories. Shelves can be built into a pattern glass room divider to permit more privacy in other areas of the living room. Your living room also is an ideal place to display your hobby. There’s no better place for relatives, friends and neighbors to inspect your favorite needlework, model airplanes, potted plants, or hunting trophies. Even smaller items such as stamps or coins can be displayed in a “personalized” living room-hobby center combination. THE KEY to displaying your hobby also is “imagination. Shelves, tables and walls all are possibilities. For example, the most colorful stamps from your collection can be mounted in an interesting pattern, framed and hung on the wall. If your hobby is gardening, your prize plants and flowers can be arranged into attractive combinations and integrated into the style and color of the overall room decor. Your hobby offers a myriad of design possibilities for the theme of the entire living room. If model ships are your interest, an anchor naval flags or pictures of ships could accent your displays of the models. Trophies for excellence in sports could be arranged with pictures relating to the sport or souvenirs of particular games. A FAMILY with outdoor interests easily can bring beauty of the outdoors into the living room with a glass wall dr picture window of Thermopane insulating glass. This “Open World” room provides ample natural light for all indoor activities. “These are just a few examples of how you can make your living room a symbol of your own interests, talents and abilities, ” Mr. Sherwin said. “Don't let the usual concepts of a ‘ living room stop you from creating a place where you will spend many happy hours,” he concluded.
