SOCIAL SECURITY QUIZ Q. My son is age 17 and is drawing social security benefits. If he goes into military service, will his benefits stop? A. You must report to social security if your son leaves your care. If you are drawing mother’s benefits and have no other children entitled to benefits in your care, your checks will stop. Your son’s checks will continue and may be paid directly to him unless bis earning will be over SI2OO for the year, or he should marry before age 18. Q. I have been drawing social security benefits for several years and have always worked part-time, earning less than SI2OO a year. Now that I have received my reports of earnings for 1963, I find that I earned $1250. Do I have to turn the SSO over to the social security office? A. No, you must file a report of your earnings with the social security administration by April 15, 1964, as you agreed to do when you filed for benefits. The amount of $25 will be withheld from your future benefits because the deduction is $1 for each $2 earned over sloo—up to SI7OO. The deductions apply only if you were under age 72 for at least one month of the year. Q. I work ns a chambermaid in a hotel. I receive my board and lodging, as well as cash wages for my work. I notice that my tax withholding slip (W-2) for last year shows only the total cash I received. Doesn’t the board and room also count as wages on my social security record ? A. Board and room are con-

sidered “wages” for social security purposes in most employment except domestic work done in the private home of the employer and work done on a farm. To straighten this out, ask at your local social security district office for Form 7004. After you fill this out and mail it, you will receive a statement of your earnings from social security in Baltimore as they have been reported by your employer. If the statement shows that the value of board and room has npt been reported, your district office will assist you in correcting the situation. You should take this action immediately since the records cannot be changed after three years have elapsed. Q. Each year I check my W-2 form against my own figures, and so far my total for the year has checked out correctly. Should I assume, then, that my social security earnings record is correct? A. No. Since your earnings are being reported to social security by your employer, the fact that the W-2 figures are correct does not guarantee that the social security record is correct. The social security administration urges each worker to check on his own social security wage record from time to time. Your district office will gladly provide you with a convenient postcard which you may fill out and mail. In a matter of weeks, you will receive a statement of your earnings as they appear on your social security earnings record. Notify your social security district office promptly if you find that any part of the record is incorrect. Q. My father and I have the same name and we both work in the same textile factory. Is there any chance that our wages may get mixed up on our social security records? A. Although you have the same name as your father, your social security account number is different than his. Assuming that your names and social security numbers were properly record-

year, I left one job and took on another. Each employer paid me more than S4BOO and each withheld the full social security tax from my pay. Should this be? A. Yes. Each employer is required by law to withhold the correct amount of social security tax based on your wages, and to report the wages paid. However, you are required to contribute Only the tax due on wages up to S4BOO. You may recover any excess payment of tax by claiming a refund on your income tax return.
