Ace Lafayette Guard Key To Jeffmen Hopes By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — An ailing knee may be the key to the winner of the Northwest semi-state in Saturday’s Indiana high school basketball tourney at Purdue. The knee belongs to Denny Brady, Lafayette’s ace guard and top scorer. He re-injured it in the sectionals against Southwestern, was hospitalized for a brief period and has seen hardly any action since then. He got into the game in the closing moments against Clinton Prairie last Saturday but rode the bench at night against North White. Coach Marion Crawley obviously was saving his “ace in the hole” for next Despite its lofty No. 2 statewide ranking and a gaudy 24-1 record, Lafayette may need Brady in the second afternoon game against Gary Tolleston, a first-time regional winner at East Chicago. Tougher Route Tolleston, 22-4, had a much tougher tourney route than the Jeffmen. but the host dub, with a 15-game winning streak, must rate as the team to beat. Only Tipton, eliminated in the Carmel sectional, managed to lick Crawley’s eagers during the season. And if Brady is ready to go Saturday, Lafayette should be hard to stop. With an ailing team last year, Lafayette barged into the 4team finals for the 12th time only to lose to eventual champion Muncie Central. 73-71. Brady, Jack Walkey, Dave Morrison, Stu Miller and Terry Stillabower all were key members of that outfit—and all are back. Lafayette beat Valparaiso, which meets Greencastle in the opener, 91-81, in its holiday tourney, and Valp beat Tolleston in a Northwest Conference game, 90-80. All four are major conference teams—Lafayette being North Central Conference champ and Greencastle belonging to the Western loop. Cousins on Team Greencastle wormed its way through its own regional district and comes well recommended with a 22-3 record in Dave McCracken’s first year. The Tiger Cubs • have good height and balance with Ron Blotch, Ron Chadd and Dave York in the front line and a pair of scrappy guards in Phil Cooper and Ron York. There’s another York, Gerald, and the three are first cousins. Greencastle has made it to the final four three times but not since 1933 when it finished second only to Martinsville. Valparaiso lost eight times during the season, then swept through the Chesterton sectional and Logansport regional by a winning margin of better than 20 points. The Crusaders had their troubles in the regional, however, winning from North Judson by just three points and by new* comer Pioneer by two. All four contenders have a tourney scoring average of better than 80 points. At Tolleston. Joe Vance’s boys have won their last eight starts, six in tourney play, and any club capable of surviving the East Chicago meatgrinder cannot be ignored going into the next-to-last lap of the four-wek show.. Gary Player Winner Os Pensacola Open PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI) — South African Gary Player licked a career-long jinx, 14 months of pressure and his friendly nemesis Arnold Palmer Monday to win the Pensacola PGA Open golf tournament in a three-way playoff. Player, returning to his driver on the tees for the first time in several months, fired a one-under-par 71 over the 36-36—72 Pensacola Country Club course to defeat defending champion Palmer by one stroke and winless Miller Barber by three shots. Player picked up $4,000. It was his first tourney win since San Diego in January, 1963. Palmer and Barber, who has not won a PGA tournament in four years of competition, divided second and third place money for $2,300 each. “There was more pressure on me than at any other time in my life,” the weary Player said. “I was playing against two great golfers. And. as you know, all together I have lost 10 playoffs and never won one until now.” Palmer, seeking his third Pensacola crown and second in a row, now has a playott record of 11-5, including a Masters win over Player and Dow Finsterwald.

Purdue Upsets Michigan, I. U. Beals Wildcats CHICAGO (UPl)—Michigan will go to next Friday’s NCAA Midwest regional playoff as the nation’s second - ranked team and part-owner of the Big Ten basketball championship. Whatever chances the Wolverines had for their first full possession of the conference crown in 16 years were shattered last night when Purdue beat them on their own floor 81-79. The setback left Michigan with an 11-3 record for the league season, identical to Ohio State, which also fell victim to a home court upset in its season finale Saturday night. Michigan's right to represent the conference in the NCAA was undisputed since in case of a tie for the title the Big Ten always favors the team with the longest absence from the national tourney. The Boilermakers and Wolverines traded leads nine times in the last 10 minutes of the game. The Boilermakers, paced by Bob Purkhiser with 26 points and sophomore Dave Schellhase with 25, pulled in
front with little more than a minute left to play. Cazzie Russell, Michigan's sharpshooting sophomore, sank 27 points, but Bill Buntin, the other half of the Wolverine one-two punch, got only 19, which is six or seven points less than he usually accounts for. The upset at Ann Arbor gave Ohio State an unprecedented streak of winning or sharing the Big Ten cage jitle for five consecutive seasons. In two other season finales, Indiana defeated Npr th western, 76-68, and lowa was bombed again, this time, 90-67, by Illinois in Hawkeye coach Sharm Scheuerman’s last game. Jon McGlocklin and Dick VanArsdale, with 20 points apiece, led the Hoosiers to a final 5-9 conference record and 9-15 overall. Selvy To Retire, Coach At Furman . GREENVILLE, S. C. (UPI) — Los Angeles Laker star Frank Selvy will retire from professional basketball at the end of the National Basketball Association season and will join the coaching staff of his alma mater., Furman University, where in 1954 he set a scoring record of 41.7 points per game and established the college single game high of 100 points in a game.
