UE's Legislative Conference Opens WASHINGTON — A two-day legislative conference of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, UE, opened here this morning at the Hotel Continental. Almost 200 delegates from the union’s locals throughout the nation are attending the meeting and after today’s conference will fan out through the capital to visit their local congressmen and senators to urge support for the union’s legislative program. The conference is giving top priority to measures designed to combat poverty, civil rights legislation and medical care for the aged (medicare). The measures proposed to combat poverty are: The shorter work week, to provide jobs; improved unemployment compensation, to help the jobless; a $2 an hour minimum wage, to help the employed who are living in poverty.
