Will Your Homo Burn? You Decatur area residents who telephone the fire department whenever the fire alarm rings — do you realize that some day your own home may well burn down while you try to dial in, because the volunteer firemen, who have to find out where the fire is to fight it, cannot call in while you are on the line? Yes, you would like to know if your home is on fire, or if your mother, or relative, is in danger. But your home and loved ones are in far greater danger if the firemen can’t get there. Ten minutes may well mean the difference between a little fire and a total disaster, with loss of life. And we have had a number of firenjen held up TEN MINUTES or more —by thoughtless persons, who clog the telephone line. Now there are 18 volunteer firemen who have-to get through on that line. Only ten can get through at a time. This is bad enough. But hundreds of local people are calling in. It is getting so bad that the fire chief may have to ask that the Citizens Telephone Company check on those calling in, and then prefer charges against them for interfering with the official duties of a fireman on call. If you want to know if it is your home, call someone there, or call a neighbor — but don’t call the fire department number, even if you know it. And don’t clog the area around the fire. Frequently ogling spectators block the way— a very serious charge, by the way, if the firemen or police want to prefer charges. Would you like to stand and watch your house burn down, while firemen dial in vain to discover where the fire is? If not, do a good turn, and stay off the line. If you have youngsters who might be tempted to call or go to the scene, warn them of the dangers. Let’s keep Decatur a safe and sane place in which to live! Editorial written by— Dick Heller
