Adams Central's Jets All Set For Regional

Adams Central’s Flying Jets finished their celebrating early this week and turned their thoughts to the next, stop in the annual I.H.S.A.A. dribble derby —the 1 Fort Wayne regional tourney and the Aces of Ashley. The Jets won the right to advance with three thrilling victories in the’ sectional tourney in their gymnasium last week. After edging Hoagland, one of three teams to beat them during the regular season, the Jets won another squeaker, 61-58, over Monmouth Saturday afternoon. Then in the evening, they quelled a late Berne rally and whipped the Bears, 78-60, to post the school’s first sectional title in its 15-year history, and also avenge another regular season setback. In all three games the Jets displayed something they will need plenty of this Saturday, the ability to stand up to the pressure of closely-fought tourney *battles. Play at 12:30 The Adams Centralites will go against Ashley, winner of the Angola sectional, in the first game at the war piemorial coliseum in Fort Wayne Saturday. Fort 'Wayne 'ftgers, winner of that sectional, battle tall Garrett in the second game. Garrett emerged from the Kendallville sectional meet. Coach Zurcher put his charges through some rugged workouts this week in preparing for the Ashley battle. Die Jets traveled to Fort Wayne this morning to get in a couple of hours practice on the Coliseum hardwood, and the team is reported physically fit and ready to go. No Pushover Although the Jets drew the smallest school in the Fort Wayne meet (186 student enrollment and 112 boys, in a town of 751 population), their foe certainly cannot be termed the weak sister of the regional field. The Aces are not a tall team, with one exception, but they are a well-experienced crew and are certainly in top physical condition. The starting five with the exception of senior Larry Biggerstaff, comprised the cross-coun-try team which stunned the state by winning the state cross-coun-Hockey Results National League Boston 4, Chicago 4 (tie). try meet last fall. Senior center Jaclj Baumgardner stands six feet, sue inches tall, but after him, Ashley’s size drops considerably. Biggerstaff, a 6-% senior and John Hamman, another 644 senior, make up the front line with Baumgardner. Starting guards are Jim Reinoehl, 5-11, and Steve Grill, 5-10 senior. Top substitutes are Bill McClish, a 5-11 junior and the fifth member pf the state crosscountry champs, and 5-9 sophomore Jon GriU. Expected Back Hamman, one of the starting forwards, missed sectional action with a pulled tendon in his left arm that brought about bleeding and swelling. He is expected to be in the lineup Saturday, however. Four of the five Ashley starters carry twin-figure averages, and the fifth just misses the figure. Baumgardner is the team’s leading scorer with an average of 17 per game, while Biggerstaff is averaging 15 per game, and Grill and Reinoehl are scoring 13 per contest. Hamman is close to double figures, averaging nine a game, jand is the team’s second leading rebounder. The Aces played four games in the Angola sectional, and their smallest winning margin was pine points. Diey bested Mongo 8738, downed Angola 53-35, whipped LaGrange 72-55 and then foiled a Brighton stall to win the tourney by a 51-42 score in the champion. hip contest. Great Season Die Ashley boys posted a brilliant record of 18-2 in the regular season, both defeats coming at the hands of a tough Eastside team, by margins of three and seven points. Adams Central and Ashley met just two common foes during the seasoiC Leo and Woodlan. Die Jets downed Leo by a 63-49 score, and the Aces beat the Lions by a 76-40 margin. The Aces thumped Woodlan 75-45, while the Jets beat the same club by a 64-6 C score. Experienced Crew The Aces have an unbelievable amount of experience, as three players are regulars for the fourth year in succession, starting as freshmen. They have had the same starting five for the past two seasons. Ashley had won the sectional just once previously, in 1946. The Flying Jets from Monroe, of course, have just won their first. Neither has ever won a regional meet, but this could be the year.

(UPD— An unidentified bettor Thursday won the largest payoff in American horseracing history—sß4,114.20 at Gulfstream Park race track. The winnings surpassed the former record of $79,660.30 paid to Joseph Mariano, a bartender from Waterbury, Conn., at New York’s Roosevelt Raceway Nov. 6, 1963. The big twin double jackpot here evolved in a set of circumstances in which the winner only had to pick three ot the four winners to do it—"' x The payoff came about this way: ' First, the 70 to 1 shot Scattergood won the fifth race to pay $142.60 in the win pool. In the sixth race, Col. Engel ($8.60) came in first. Only 218 persons had live tickets for the second half of the twin, the eighth and ninth races. In *the* eighth? Initadas wbn at $115.40 for a $2 win bet when the first horse across the finish line was disqualified for interference. And only one ticket holder held a twin double ticket with Initadas’ number on it. The bettor, thus, collected the entire p 001—584,114.20. Track officials said the lucky bettor didn't pick the ninth race winner correctly, but didn’t have to. Officials could not identify the winner. But they noted that it costs $4 and up to sit in the Gulfstream clubhouse and $2 to gain admittance to the grandstand. This year, the track added an annex and charges only $1 admission. * And the $1 section was where the holder of the winning tickets was sitting. , Cardinals, Vikings Schedule Exhibition ST. Columbus And Lafayette Are Top Favorites By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International - INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Unbeaten Columbus and once-c^e-, seated Lafayette were installed as top-heavy favorites today for Saturday’s Indiana high school basketball tourney regionals—the gateway to the “Sweet Sixteen.” Top-ranking Columbus was highly favored to run its perfect string to 25 at the expense of Madison and the FranklinClarksburg winner. Lafayette, No. 2 in the UPI coaches’ board ratings, was the fat choice in its bailiwick, over Clinton Prairie and the FowlerNorth White winner. Seven other regional tourneys have favorites while it was virtually a toss-up in the six others. aswg Also expected to reach next week’s semi-state rounds were' Elkhart, Evansville Rex Mundi; Rushville at Connersville, Greencastle, JJeymour at Jeffersqnville, Kokomo, Valparaiso aY= Logansport and Huntington at a WW ; J But it was expected to be touch-and-go at such sessions aU East Chicago, Fort Way ng t Huntingburg, Indianapolis, Ne!w Castle and Terre Haute. Shifting of the Chesterton sectional winner to the Logansport regional, considered one of the biggest breaks in the new alignment, changed Valparaiso’s status from. a darkhorse to the favorite. Instead of being tossed into the Calumet area’meat grinder, as in the past," Valpo could breathe considerably easier this time—especially since Logansport was eliminated, in the sectionals and the opposition there did not appear to be potent enough to stop the Crusaders, who meet North Judson, then figure to get a crack at the Pioneer-DeMottewinner. Os the regionals in the category, most of the interest centered on East Chicago, and Indianapolis. At East Chicago, the host Senators go against a good Gary Tolleston crew while Froebel of the Steel City, upsetter of third-rated Gary Roosevelt, tangles with Michigan City. Indianapolis Tech and Anderson, two “Big 10” members, hold the spotlight at Indianapolis, where the city's Howe Hornets were favored to at least reach the regional finals at the expense of Danville.

Jet Fans Warned On Taking Precautions Fpr Regional Travel Sheriff Roger Singleton and Carl Honaker, Adams Central high school principal, today asked fans of the Flying Jets, who will play Ashley In the opening game of the regional tourney at Fort Wayne Saturday, to take care in decorating vehicles. Motorists were urged not to hamper the driver’s view when decorating cars. The four buses carrying the team and band members to Fort Wayne will be provided with a police escort all the way to the coliseum. However, it will be impossible to escort the motor caravan of private cars through the city, so those in the caravan are warned to observe all traffic signs and laws while driving through Fort Wayne. Honaker also stated that Adams Central received only 1,676 regional tickets, less than the amount announced earlier, and that 1,622 of these had been sold by Thursday afternoon, leaving only 54 on hand this morning.
