Tourney Notes

By Bob Shraluka With little less than a minute remaining to play Don Egley and Art Ringger were removed from the lineup with their team leading Berne, 74-58. Both covered nearly the length of the floor in four, maybe five, leaps into the waiting arms of coach Vernon Zurcher and thus touched off the happiest—and wildest —< night in the 15-year history of Adams Central high school. —t oOo— The moment that final gun went off, the gymnasium was a scene of fnass hysteria, such as hasn’t been seen in the past couple of years. Sectional titles became more or less old hat to Berne fans. But to Adams Central fans—well, there is' nothing quite like that first one. —oOo— # The Flying Jets, auL ..-thtir . name well-befitted themthis season, accomplished many things Saturday night. They not only won their first sectional title, but ended a record-tieing string of four for Berne. They also assured the Fort Wayne regional meet of a new champ and during the tournament, avenged two of their four season defeats with victories over Hoagland and Berne. The Jets can be a bit proud also, in that the only other team that beat them, Ossian, who did it twice, failed to win its sectional title. Coach Zurcher expressed the panda monium quite well when asked to round up his boys for pictures after the trophy presentation. “Man, I can’t control these kids now,” he said. Shooting percentages weren’t one of the high points of the tourney, at least until Saturday evening. The Jets took just 43 shots and hit on 22 of them for a redhot .512 mark. Berne hit 23 of 65 for a .354 percentage. Mon-, mouth, hit 21 of 57 in the afternoon, a percentage of .370, and. Berne shot at a .347 clip, 17 of 49. Adams Central wasn’t as hot in the daytime, hitting 19 of 61, for a .311 figure, and Decatur hit on 16 of 51 attempts for a .304 .

percenatge. There was some good individual shooting in the Saturday session. In the afternoon, Greg Ladd hit six of 12; Loren Wanner, five of 10; Bob Patterson, four of nine; Roger Schnepp, seven of 14; Bill Hirschy, six of 16; Dean Schieferstein, eight of 16; and' Gene Bienz, seven of 15. At night, Gary Clouse hit five of eight; Tony Ehrsarm four of six; Don Egley, four of eight; and Art Ringger, four or 11.' Rick Inniger's seven of 13 led Berne and Wanner scored on seven of 16 shots. ■ 000— Egley, the rugged backboard, ace, was the tourney’s top rebounder, as he pulled down 10 in the afternoon and four at night to go aloqg with his 16 Thursday, for a tatalfof 30. Dick McKean, aniirtbcr flagged rebounder, -grabbed 13 in the title game and sevefi against Decatur for a tourney total of 29. Greg Ladd ranked third with 28 in just , two games, as he finished a fine year with 15 rebounds against Berne. Clouse finished the tournament with a total of 26 rebounds, including 11 against Monmouth, and Wanner and Decatur’s Sam Blythe had totals of 22 and 21, respectively. Jump-shooting Dean Schieferstein of Monmouth and Inniger were the meet’s top scorers, each with 52 points. Schieferstein had the best average as he played just two games. Wanner ranged third with 47 tallies and sophomore Roger Schnepp tallied 45, high for the champs. Egley also topped 40, hitting that figure exactly. The new titlists proved the cld Yixiom that a well-balanced attack makes a winning basketball team. The Jets had balance all through the tourney. After Schnepp's 45 tourney points and Egley’s 40, came Bill Hirschy with 34, Tony Ehrsam with 28, Art Ringger with 26 and Gary Clouse with 19. Ehrsam shot .486 from the field

in the three games, while Clouse hit at a .438 clip, Schnepp at an even .400, Hirschy at .394, Egley at .375, and Ringger at .346. Inniger, who is doing a fine job in keeping the family name in the spotlight, was the meet’s best shooter percentage-wise. Rick shot at a terrific .556 clip, netting 20 two-pointers in 36 shots. Schieferstein fired at a .487 clip, Ladd finished with a .458 percentage and Wanner came in at .432 in three games. After watching the past seven games in the Adams Central tourney, it appears a coach should Spend at least 50 to 60 per cent Os his practice time free throws. A-total uIKRW fodU ’ called in the seven games, in av-' erage of over 36 per contest, and six technicals were also whistled. A total of 361 free throws were attempted for an averageof 41 per game. There were just 50 more field goals than free throws scosed, 293 to 243. In four of the seven games, inciuding the championship battle, the losing team scored the most field goals. Decatur was even called for a technical foul when pave Hammond reported to the wrong person at the scorer's bench! Hammond apparently gave the timer his name, the horn blew and he was waved into the action. As soon as play began, the official scorer buzzed the hdrti again and told the referee that Hammond didn’t officially report. The A. C. boys were so happy that when they threw their coach into the showers after the game, they walked right in under the water also, with uniforms and basketball shoes still on. Last year’s coach and this year’s principal and tourney manager Carl Honaker was also quite proud of the lads he had worked with just last season. A week prior to the tourney, Honaker was asked to pose for a picture with the trophy. He requested to remain out of the picture, however, saying “I want to be taken with it after the championship game.” How right he was. There were some fine individual performances throughout the tourney, but for an all-tourney ten- we’d like Egley, Hirschy and Schnepp of the champs, Wanner and Inniger of the runnerups, Ladd and Blythe of the Yellow Jackets, Schieferstein of the Eagles, Dave Sprague of Hoagland and Commodore Terry Myers, and use Ehrsam of the Jets and Gene Bienz of Monmouth to round out the certified 12. Deca-; tur outrebounded Berne 21-11 in the first half, and Ladd had as many as the entire Berne team ... they say you can’t keep a good man down, and Gary Clouse, who had been held in check through two games’, scored 12 points in the evening game’s first period . . ..Dick McKean, also held in check in two games,

The heartiest of congratulations to the Adams Central < Flying Jets and their coach, Vern Zurcher. It was a great victory for the Jgta, the first sectional champidfcf ishi|pm^the:/chooi 1 * J * tory The Adams Central boys I had to battle their hearts out in every one of their three tourney triumphs, pulling themselves up -.off the floor when their opponents had them down. —oOo— For the Berne Bears, it wak a bitter pill as they saw their hopes of a new sectional record, a‘fifth straight title, go down the drain. —oOoi— Seldom have closer games been played in the local sectional. While there were many ragged spots, they were overshadowed by the thrills all the way through. Probably the less said about the officiating the better. The only consistent thing about the three whistle blowers was their inconsistency. It seems a shame when these fine young athletes, working their hardest, have to play under such officiating that the boys don’t know from one play to the next which way the guys in the striped shirts are going to call the game. —-oOo—■ While this is Adams Central’s first sectional crown, the consolidated predecessors won four championships, Monroe three and Kirkland one. —oOo— The Jets now carry the hopes of Adams county fans into the Fort Wayne regional Saturday. The Jets will meet the Ashley Aces, Angola sectional champions, in the regional opener at the coliseum at 12:30 p.m. In the second game, Fort Wayne Central will play the bi g Garrett Railroaders. The final margin of 18 points belies the closeness of the championship game. The Jets led by a single point, 57-56, with 4:40 left to play in the game, but from Ih’h a t point on the Bears faded < completely away, with the Jets and easily adding to their advantage. Berne reduced its deficit by two points in the second period, as the Jets took a 36-32 margin to the dressing room at half-time. Dick McKean, also well shackled in earlier games, netted 12 points for tfoe Bears in this period. The defending champs stayed right ta the ball game through the third stanza, and the Bears, paced by Loren Wanner’s three fielders, were within ope point, 49-48, at the end of the quarter. Fred Clauser opened the final canto with a pair of free throws, and the Bears were in front, SO--49, for Berne’s only lead of the final contest. Tony Ehrsam’s' twopointer returned Vernon Zurcher’6 boys to the lead and the teams exchanged points to the 57-56 score with 4:40 to play. Ehrsam’s fourth field goal and a pair of ■►free throws by Roger Schnepp sent the Jets away winging and the Bears were finished. Adams Central had five players in double figures in a wellbalanced attack. Don Egley was tops with 16 pointe, Gary Clouse and Art Ringger each scored 14, Tony Ehrsam 11 and Roger Schnepp 10, eight of them, on free throws in as many attempts. The Jets converted 34 of 38 at the 15foot stripe, the Bears 14 of 24, as 23 fouls were called on Berne, 18 on the Jets, who were outscored from the field, 23-22. Jackets Eliminated The Decatur Yellow Jackets, battling to salvage some glory from a bad season, were ousted by the Bears in a heart-break-ing defeat for Decatur in an overtime battle in the first semifinal, 49-48. The battle of these old rivals was close all the way, with the biggest difference a six-point advantage for the Yellow Jackets late in the second quarter. The lead changed hands five times in the first quarter, which ended in an 11-11 deadlock. Paced by Gregg Ladd’s 10 points, the Jackets moved into a 28-22 margin late in the second period, with Wanner’s free throw making the half-time score 28-23 in favor of Bill McColly s lads. Bob Patterson, Clauser and Inniger hit from the field in the first two minutes of the third period and the Bears were on top, 29-28. The teams traded points the rest of the way in the period, with Berne on top, 39-37, entering the final eight minutes. . The Bears upped their advantage to 44-39 after three minutes, but Craig-McEwarr dropped in a brace of foul tosses, added a field goal, and Sarm Blythe potted a bucket and the tickets were back on top, 45-44, with 2;45 to play.

Clauser's free throw with two minutes to play knotted the score at 45-45, and neither team could score again, forcing the overtime session. Berne took the tipoff opening the extra session and held on to the ball for slightly more than a minute. But Max Elliott interecepted a pass at mid court, drove under and was fouled by Loren Wanner, who left the game with his fifth personal. Elliott converted one of the foul chances and the Jackets led. 46-45. Decatur regained the ball after a missed Berne shot, but the Bears took the ball with one minute to go when a Decatur pass went out of bounds. Patterson hit a jump shot from the foul line and Bears were on top, 47-46 with 35 seconds left. Patterson iced the contest with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds to go. The Bears converted 15 of 20 free throws, the Jackets 16 of 19, as 14 personals were called on Berne, and 13 personals and three technicals on the Jackets. Eagles Are Ousted The second semi-final maintained the closeness of the sectional play, as the Jets outlasted the Eagles, 61-58. It was the third straight triumph of the season for Adams Central over Monmouth. Hie first two quarters were an exact reversal in form by the two teams. The quintets were deadlocked at 9-9 after five minutes of play, but the Eagles then rolled to a 20-13 lead at the end of the first period. But the Jets were really flying high in the second stanza, limiting the Eagles to only 10 points while the Jets ripped the nets, for 25 markers and a 38-30 margin at the half, as Egley tallied nine points, Schnepp and Hirschy each eightDon Elder’s charges cut Adams Central’s lead to four points, 47-43 at the end of the third quarter, and kept whittling away at the Jets, finally pulling into a 53-53 tie with 4:40 to play. , Egley’s two free throws regained the lead for Adams Central, but with 47 seconds of the battle remaining. Dean Schieferstein intercepted a pass at midcourt and dribbled all the way under for a layup and the Eagles were in front, 58-57. With 26 seconds left, an Adams Central shot missed but Roger Schnepp batted in a rebound and the Jets were again ahead. A Monmouth shot missed and Schnepp was fouled with 15 seconds to go. The Jets’ sophomore center cooly dropped in both shots and the Jets’ were in the final. Schnepp was the game’s top pointmaker with 22 points, trailed by Egley with 17 and Hirschy with 15. Gene Bienz led the Eagles with 21 and Schieferstein added 20. The Jets converted 23 of 28 foul chances, the Eagles 16 of 20, as 20 fouls were called on Monmouth, 16 on Adams Central.
