The Greek and Turkish governments said the naval maneuvers had nothing to do with the situation on Cyprus, but officials of the Greek - dominated island government warned Turkey against trying an invasion to come to the aid of Cyprus’ Turkish minority. A Greek fleej of destroyers, troop transports and landing ships spiled from Crete and elsewhere Sunday for exercises in the Aegean Sea. Informed sources said the transports were packed with soldiers. The Greek naval action followed similar Turkish maneuvers started last week 80 miles off Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. Hiree Turkish submarines also were participating in a NATO exercise with American ships around Samos Island. There were indications that that further major violence may be averted through a solution negotiated at the United Nations. Sources close to president Archbishop Makarios ex- - pressed qualified optimism about a proposed resolution to be submitted to the U.N. Security Council. Authoritative sources at the United Nations in New York said the resolution calls for the immediate dispatch of a U.N.sponsored peace force to Cyprus and apointment of pan impartial mediator to work out a political settlement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Trainman Is Killed In Freak Accident HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (UPI)—A Pennsylvania Railroad crewman was killed Sunday when a steel hatch cover destined for a shipbuilder shifted on its open gondola car and sliced through three diesel units of a passing train. The victim was identified as Edgar Paul Jones of Logansport. Four other crew members on the two trains were injured, none seriously. State Police Trooper Richard Hamilton of Hartford City said the hatch cover was solkj steel ranging in thickness from 2 to 4 inches and had shifted so 6 to 8 feet of it projects over the side of the car. He said the huge plate was nearly the length of the car. “It went through those engines like a knife through butter,” Hamilton said. The two freights were passing each other on a curve about two miles west of here at about 35 miles per hour when the accident occurred. Hamilton said the hatch cover was ip the 19th car from the engine of the westbound freight enroute from Columbus, Ohio,® to Logansport. Injured were the engineer of the eastbound freight, Charles ’Strew, 44, Logansport; the fireman on the same train, Richard Leslie, 41, Twelve Mile; the brakeman on the train, Richard Erwin, 32, Wyandotte, Ohio; and the brakeman on the westbound train, Lewis Fowler, 48, Columbus, .Ohio. , Hamilton quoted .Leslie as saying Jones did not have .a chance. Leslie told him the crew ip the second unit of the three-unit diesels was just moving to the other side in accordance ' with Safety regulations when the huge plate sliced into the cabs. • Pontiac • GMC Now 4 Used Can & Trucks EVANS Sales & Service!
