Only 64 Teams Still In Race After Tonight By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — A battle-tested field of 256, headed by nine of 10'top-rated powers, was still pitching today going into the last day of Indiana’s high school baskejtbal sectional tourneys. By tonight, only the 64 firstround champs will remain from an original field of 597. Missing was Sou thern Conference champ Evansville Central, the No. 10 club which was upset by city rival Mater Dei Thursday night. The two small-town unbeatens have also come to the end of the road—San Pierre Thursday night at Knox and Selma, which fell Friday night to Muncie South, 64-61, ending its 22game winning streak. For the Muncie crew, Terry York’s 25 points, including the last four, sparked the victory over Selma. -» That left top-rated Columbus, with a 21-game string, the lone unbeaten club left. Columbus made a belated tourney start Friday night, outclassing Shelbyville, 84-40. The one - sided scrap was 43-19 at the half. Lafayette, Gary Roosevelt, Indianapolis Tech, Anderson, Tipton and Elkhart, all seasonlong powers, also romped virtually unchallenged to gain the afternoon sectional semi-finals. Today’s Lineup Members of the UPI “Big 10” drew these opponents: Columbus vs Waldron, 1963 tourney finalist Lafayette vs Southwestern, Roosevelt - Froebel at Gary, Tech-Broad Ripple at Indianapolis, Washington - Wood of Indianapolis at Southport, Anderson vs Madison 18th Anniversary Post 6238 V.F.W. Intramural Tourney Will Open Tuesday The Lincoln school junior high intramural basketball tourney will open Tuesday, with teams 1 and 7 meeting at 3 p.m. and teams 3 andn 4 playing at 4 p.m. Teams 5 and 6 will play WednM< day at 3 p.m., teams 2 and 8 will battle at 4 p.m. The Tuesday winners meet at 3 p.m. Thursday and the Wednesday winners tangle at 4 p.m. The championship game will be played Friday at 3 p.m. Heights, Tipton vs Noblesville at Carmel, Elkhart vs Penn, and Huntington vs Union. South Bend Central, runnerup to sidelined champion Muncie Central last year, met Lakeville and Garfield, the other tourney finalist last time, clashed with Wiley at Terre Haute. Lafayette drubbed neighbor Catholic, 89-60, with Jack Walkey and Terry Stillabower tossing in 24 and 20 points, respectively. Gary’s Panthers blasted Maim of the Steel City, 109-48, and Tech disposed of Indianapolis Cathedral, 81-66. Elkhart’s Northern Conference champs dumped Concord, 71-49; Tipton blasted Westfield at Carmel, 104-71, Don Curnutt and Dick Mclntosh hooping 26 points apiece, and Anderson’s Indians dumped Lapel, 76-49, four players hitting in double figures. Garfield made its tourney bid with a 63-54 win over suburban West Vigo but Evansville Bosse, the team Garfield upset en route to the 1963 state finals, again stubbed its toe—this time against city foe North, 70-51— Ten defending sectional champs were eliminated, making a total of 16 on the sidelines. Ireland, Connersville and Bosse are the only regional champs back that have been ousted. Champa Beaten Besides Bosse, sectional champs beaten Friday included Albioh by Auburn at Kendallville, 73-59; Peru by Pioneer at Logansport, 62-47; Angola by Ashley, 53-35; Greensburg by North Vernon, 67-62; Greenwood by Franklin, 75-73; Free- > hy Switz City, 98-61; Connersville by Alquina, 64-57; Sullivan by Carlisle, 50-44, and Knox by Aubbeenaubbee, 72-55. Winchester went on the biggest scoring spree in three days of sectional warfare, romping past Madison Twp., 114-72. Dave Moore’s 29 points led the rout. ■ s .. . Gary Froebel’s Northwest Conference champs drubbed city rival Wallace, 85-67, to qualify against Roosevelt in a pivotal Far North scrap. Fort Wayne Concordia’s Northeast Conference winners kept going at the expense of New Haven, 84-73, behind Tom Baack’s 32 points. Among the night’s top scorers was Cory’s John Jackson with 42, but it wasn’t enough as Spencer won at Van Buren, 9384. The heartbreaker of the night probably took place at Brownsburg, where a technical foul assessed for one time out too many gave Stilesville a 72-70 win over Plainfield. Junior captain Roger Beck hit the technical and made good on a 1-and-1 situation.

Finley Signs Lease To Play At Kansas City KANSAS CITY (UPI) — As Charley Finley says, it’s time to "play ball.” . And indeed it was. While his Kansas City Athletics were opening spring training in Florida Friday, Finley picked up a red pen in a hotel room here and signed an escape-proof, four-year lease on Municipal Stadium. The flick of his pen on the 28-page document ended his twomonth impasse with the city over terms of a lease. And it brought him peace in his battle with the American League, which twice blocked his attempts to transfer the Athletics and then threatened to expel him from baseball. Although the lease contained the binding provisions Finley had sworn 24 hours earlier never to accept, he signed it with a smile and then stamped it with his corporate seal as the law requires. “In spite of huge losses which I have suffered in Kansas City during the past three years,” he said in a statement, ‘I approach the pew season in Kansas City with enthusiasm. “I love baseball. That is why I am in it. That is why I am going to stay in it “Let’s forget the past,” he continued. “Everything is water over the dam. Let’s forget what has been said. “Let’s go forward. I’m eagerly awaiting the familiar cry — “play ball.” Peppy Pals The first meeting of the Preble Peppy Pals was called to order by the outgoing president, Jan MiUer. The club welcomed a new leader, Mrs. Clarence Bultemier. The two leaders who are again with the club are Mrs. Arnold Scheumann and Mrs. Elbert Fuhrmann. Due to the size of the club, it was decided to divide it into junior and senior division. There are eight members in the senior division. ** Election "of officers ln the seafor club was held with officers as follows': president, Judy Bultemeier; "vice president and news- reporter, Dianne Fuhrman; secretary-treas-urer, Susan Brelner; recereation committee, Christine Reifsteck, Kay Bultemeier, and Sandy Heckman; project planning committee, Jan Miller and Joan Scheumann. Davidson And West Virginia Upset Victims By United Press International Sooner or later the question must be answered. Why play a full season of conference games if the champion is going to be decided as a result of a threeday tournament at season's end? Friday night’s semifinals in the Southern Conference Tournament at Charlotte, N.C., produced two shockers when Virginia Military Institute eliminated top-seeded Davidson, 82-81, and Geoi’ge Washington ousted second - seeded West Virginia, 88-80. Eighth-rated Davidson went down to its fourth defeat of the year against 21 wins as Barry Teague’s jump shot rimmed the basket at the final gun. VMl’s Charlie Schmaus sank a driving layup with 14 seconds to go for the winning edge. The win, which evened the Keydet record at 11 and 11 for the • season, overshadowed a spectacular individual performance by the Wildcats’ Fred Hetzel, who repeatedly sank key baskets and, wound up with 41— points. Big Halftime Margin Hie Colonials’ victory was less exciting though none the less surprising. Entering the contest with an 11-14 mark, George Washington left the court at halftime with a 44-34 advantage and allowed the Mountaineers to get no closer than five points in th? final 20 minutes. George Washington meets VMI tonight for the right to go to Philadelphia March 9 to tackle tiie Ivy League champ in the NCAA regionals. Princeton held its one game edge in the Ivies with a 78-59 triumph over Columbis. Penn broke a three-way second place tie by beating Cornell, 73-62. Yale remained deadlocked with Penn for the runnerup spot by smashing Dartmouth, 75-58. It’s Mardi Gras all over again in New Orleans. In their , final appearance of the seasoh, Tulane upset Louisiana State, 80-68. It was the Green Waves’ f first and only win of the season, after 22 straight setbacks.. Clinches SWC Tie Texas A&M clinched at least a tie for the Southwest Conference title with a 75-70 win over Southern Methodist. The Aggies can take it all if Arkansas defeats Texas Tech tonight. Hie Western Athletic Conference rance was tightened when first-place Arizona State lost to Brigham Young, 106-90, and
