Opposes Equal Pay Bill For Women INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — A proposed “aqual pay for equal work” bill for women was discouraged Thursday by the only man present at the meeting of the Governor’s Commission on Status of Women. Frank C. McAlister, director of the personnel and labor relations department of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce said the women should be more concerned with the number of total jobs in the state. “I personally think you should eliminate the bill,” McAlister said after State Rep. Elsie Earning, D-Evansville, explained its aim. She was the author of similar measures during several sessions of the Legislature. She explained various changes made in the bills to make them more acceptable to opponents, and then asked for comments. McAlister said the chamber “favors equal pay for equal work” but feels the bills under discussion would discourage new business coming into the state. The commission has taken no stand on the measure, which has been presented by several important women’s organizations to the legislature during past sessions without success. Similar legislation was enacted by Congress. This has encouraged backers of proposed state legislation which would set up fines and jail terms for employers who deliberately paid women less money than men for the same jobs. Dr. Eunice Roberts, Bloomington, chairman of the commission named a subcommittee to study and report on legislative proposals, including equal pay, minimum pay, maternity . leaves and other bills which have been discussed at commission hearings. “This commission is set up to improve opportunities for women,” Dr. Roberts said. She said any legislation which “improves the economy for women, improves the total economy.’ New York Stock Exchange Price MIDDAY PRICES A.
