Sentence Young Man For Draft Evasion James A. Norris, 24-year-old member of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Puente, Calif., was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday in federal court in Fort Wayne, for draft evasion. Norris, who contended his “agreement with God” committed him to trying to abolish crime and immorality in his community rather than serving the ill and sick in hospitals, was sentenced by Judge Jesse Eschbach. Judge Eschbach offered to allow Norris to serve his two years of military service in a hospital, but the offer was turned down by the former Marion resident. "I feel I am not free to break my agreement to do good in my community where thousands of people are committing suicide, committing crimes, and need held,” Norris said. Norris thanked the judge for the offer to serve his military obligation in a hospital, but said “I dedicated myself to spiritual work. I can’t break my vowJ* A jury found Norris quilty a few weeks ago, after agruments were presented that he was exempt from the draft as a minister for Jehovah’s Witnesses.
