THE SPORTS department of the Decatur Daily Democrat offers sincere greetings to players, coaches, school officals and fans as we are on the eve of the 1964 sectional tourneyThe staff especially wishes to extend a hearty welcome to the two new schools in our sectional, the Hoagland Wildcats and Monroeville Cubs, both from neighboring Allen county. —oOo— THE SECTIONAL will get underway at 7 p. m. Wednesday at the Adams Central gym, tourney site for the 10th consecutive year. —oOo— ONLY THREE of the Adams county teams finished the 1963-64 season above the -500 mark in games won and lost, Adams Central, Decatur Commodores and Monmouth. And by the same token, Hoagland was also above the break-even point, with Monroeville on the debit side along with Berne, Geneva and the Decatur Yellow Jackets. —oOo— BERNE'S BEARS will be shooting for an unprecedented fifth sectional title in a row. By winning their fourth straight championship last year, the Bears tied a record held jointly by the Decatur Yellow Jackets and the Monmouth Eagles. The Bears carried on last year to take the Fort Wayne regional title, the second time in four years, but were ousted by South Bend Central fn the semi-state opener. Following,

as a refresher, are the scores of the 1963 sectional: Berne 66, Geneva 41, Commodores 39, Pleasant Mills 37. Adams Central 67, Yellow Jackets 61. Monmouth 82, Hartford 58- ' * \ Berne 53, Commodores 37. Monmouth 70, Adams Central 59. Berne 63, Monmouth 61 (final). —oOo— SINCE 1940, when the sectional became an all-Adams county affair, Basketbawl has attempted to pick the winner of every game. We've been a pretty "poor picker," hitting every winner only three times, although the eventual champ has been selected on many of these guesses. Last year, we missed two of the seven. This week's sectional sure looks like a really wide-open meet, so our guesses are strictly that. Here we go: —oOo— GENEVA-YELLOW JACKETS—-Both teams have had pretty sad seasons, and neither has been at all consistent. A flip of the coin probably would be the best solution here. But we were afraid we would lose the coin, so here's a hesitant pick of GENEVA. t —oOo—

BERNE-MONROEVILLE-The Bears are a far cry from the Bears of the past four years. But the Cubs are really down in this apparent rebuilding year. A pick for BERNE. ■ •/- —oOo— ——————• ADAMS CENTRAL-HOAGLAND-These teams met on the Hoagland floor a few weeks ago with the Wildcats eking out a two-point victory- That home floor advantage should more than make up that narrow margin. A pick for ADAMS CENTRAL. —oOo— MONMOUTH-COMMODORES—These friendly but fierce __ (CONTINUED ON PAGE SIX-C)
