Berne Is Seeking Fifth Consecutive Sectional Crown

An unprecedented fifth consecutive sectional title is the goal of the Berne Bears in the 1064 Adams Central sectional tourney, which opens Wednesday night. The Bears will, also be after their 11th sectional championship, which would tie them with the Decatur Yellow Jackets for the most sectional crowns. Berne won its fourth straight championship last year and the 10th in the school’s history. The four in a year matched a feat accomplished l?y the Yellow Jackets from 1949 through 1952, and the Monmouth Eagles from 1953 through 1956. Leading the teams in sectional titles are the Yellow Jackets with 11, followed by Berne with 10. Monmouth’s four crowns all came in a row. The Pleasant Mills Spartans and Hartford Gorillas each won sectional honors twice, but both of these schools have now been closed. Adams Central, Decatur Commodores and Geneva have yet to taste the glory of., a sectional championship. Adams Central has competed only since 1950. when the Kirkland, Monroe and Washington township school systems were consolidated to form Central. Prior to 1950, and Kirkland one. Decatur CatnMonroe had won three sectionals olic has participated in the sectional since 1943. when parochial schools were admitted to the Indiana high school athletic association. Monroeville and Hoagland, new to the Adams Central sectional this year, have one sectional title to show. Monroeville is the only Allen county school, outside of Fort Wayne, ever to win a sectional. Hoagland, sent to the Bluffton tourney for the past three years, has yet to claim its first sectional. Two-Bracket Setup The 1964 tourney, the 10th in a row at the Adams Central gym, will be operated under the two-bracket setup for the 11th consecutive year. This plan is designed to give an opportunity for more fans to see their favorite teams in action. Under this arrangement the bulk of the tickets for the Wednesday night session go to the fans of the four schools in the upper bracket. Similarly, most of the tickets for the Thursday nigh session are allotted to fans of the four schoolos drawn in the lower bracket. Backers of the four teams left in the running after the Wednesday and Thursday sessions will receive the bulk of the tickets for the Saturday semi-final and final sessions. Distribution of tickets for the Saturday sessions will be determined following the Thursday games. There will be no games Friday to permit distribution of tickets to the four schools still in the tourney. Previous Champions: Champions of the sectional since 1940, and scores of the final games, are as follows: 1940 — Pleasant Mills 39, Kirkland 21. 1941 — Decatur Yellow Jackets 34, Pleasant Mills 32. 1942 —- Pleasant Mills 31, Yel-
