Commodores Defeat Bryant In Season's Final Game; Jackets Defeated By Leo

YELLOW JACKETS By Bob Shraluka Decatur’s "Yellow Jackets closed out a long and dismal regular reason Friday evening, absorbing a 65-57 defeat at the hands of the Leo Lions in the Leo gymnasium. The Jackets thus concluded regular season play with three wins and 17 losses, and 11 defeats without a victory on the road. The contest was a wild affair with more free-throw shooting then basketball. Officials Jim Biddle and Don Yager tooted a total of 44 personal fouls in the contest which turned into a freethrow shooting match. The Yellow Jackets never led in the game, but stayed close most of the way. A Leo outburst at the start of the second half expanded their lead from six to 13 points and eventually proved Decatur’s downfall. The two teams were tied at 2-2 and 4-4 before the Lions snapped the tie. and Ted Gehrig’s basket with 26 seconds remaining in the period gave the home club a 14-9 advantage after the first period erf play. Craig McEwan scored three points and Greg Ladd two within the first minute of play in round two, tieing the score at 14-14. Substitute eenter Dick Minnick connected twice from the field and Leo moved to a 30-23 lead. Dave Hammond scored on a jump shot and Max Elliott on a free throw, but high-scoring Bick Boyce popped in a jumper for a 32-26 Lion advantage at the main intermission. The Lions came out roaring at the start of the third stanza, scored seven straight points and grabbed a big 39-26 lead before Elliott scored the first Jacket points with a field goal at the 5:37 mark. Close Gap A pair of late baskets by Elliott and one by Greg Ladd cut Leo’s lead to 48-44. but Boyce retaliated with a two-pointer to give his club a 50-44 advantage entering the final period. The Lions outscored the Jackets 13-5 in the first four and a half minutes of the final quarter to take their biggest lead, 63-49, and then hung on for the win. Boyce, who needs only nine points in sectional play to break an all-time Leo scoring record, led all scorers with 23 tallies, including 11 of 19 free throws, and Minnick chipped In with 12. Greg Ladd's 18 led Decatur and McEwan’s added 12. Decatur FG FT TP Ladd —— 6 6 18 Elliott 3 17 McEwan 4 4 12

COMMODORES By Pete Reynolds The Decatur Commodores wound up their regular season on a winning note Friday night, whipping the Bryant Owls, 77-59, before the homecoming crowd at the Decatur gym. It was the Commodores’ 14th triumph of the season as compared to only six losses. The Commodores broke out well in front early, in the ball game and looked headed for an easy victory, but the Owls suddenly came to life in the third period, battling their way to within one point at 46-45, but the Decatur lads quickly righted themselves and pulled away in a hurry in the final quarter for their decisive triumph. George Waning’s boys piled up a 9-2 lead after less than three minutes of play before the Jay county quintet hit its first field goal of the contest. The Commodores held this same sevenpoint margin, 24-17, at the end of the quarter. The Commodores, led by three fielders by Pat Gage, increased their advantage to 16 points in the second period, but the Owls Cut the deficit to nine, 40-31, at the half-time intermission. A pair of two-pointers by Ed Kohne and one by Dan Lose had Decatur’s lead up to 11 at 46-35 with 5:20 to play, but the Owls tallied the next 10 points, paced by three buckets by Joe Garlinger, and suddenly trailed by a lone point, 46-45, with 2:45 left in the third stanza. The Commodores braced at this juncture, however, and had their advantage bek up to five, 54-49, at the end of the third bracket. The final period was all Commodores, as two baskets by Dan Lose and one each by Jim Schultz and Terry Myers zoomed the Decatur boys to a 52-49 bulge in the first two minutes. The Owls could not put another scoring threat into the works the rest of the way. Three seniors, playing their last game before the home crowd, topped the Commodore scoring. Dan Lose led the way with 18 points, Ed Kohne counted 14 and Larry Gase 13. Garlinger led Bryant with 19, Don Snow counted 13 before fouling out at the end of the third quarter, and John Hoffman and Terry Masters each scored 10. The Commodores converted 13 of 17 free throws, the Owls 19 of 33, as 22 fouls were called on the Commodores, 13 on the Owls. Commodores FG FT TP D. Lose 8 2 18 E.
