» . ■■ - - ■ DePaul Scores 17th Victory On Wednesday By United Press International DePaul is no longer the “Other” team in Chicago. For the past few years, Loyola of Chicago’s high - scoring basketball machine has stolen the headlines and thunder from its city rival. , Now DePaul wants to stand up and be counted — and rated. \ The 13th ranked Blue Demons won their 17th game from St. Bonaventure, 81-76, which pitted two NIT - bound teams. DePaul, which started the season running off 13 straight wins before being halted by Louisville earlier this month (Memphis State was the only other loss), missed only five free throws out of 26, as five men scored in double figures. Dave Mills had 22, and Dennis Freund collected 20 points. The Bonnies one-two punch of Fred Crawford and Miles Aiken, scored 25 and 21, respectively. Pitt Downs Temple In another game involving teams slated for post-season activity, Pittsburgh, led by Dave Sauer’s 22 points, defeated Temple, 78-67. Pitt, headed for the NIT held a slim onepoint margin at the half, and controlled the second half with superior rebounding. Bill Kelly was high for the NCAA bound Owls with 20 points. Louisville, another NCAA entrant, outscored St. Francis of Loretto, Pa., 84-70. An allaround effort, topped by John Reuther’s 17 points, boosted the Cardinals record to 15-6. Sandy Williams, the nation’s 11th leading scorer, had game honors with 22 points. Ohio University battled from behind to gain a 63-60 victory over Miami (Ohio), and firstplace in the Mid - American Conference. Bradley used 15 men as it pushed its record to 17-5 with a 84-72 triumph over North Dakota. The Braves’ Laverne Tart led all scorers with 23 points. Seniors Alan Kalver, Steve Hazelwood and Sam Baumann, and junior Gary Myers were named co-captains of the 1963-64 season in recent balloting of the team members. Kalver posted a 13-3-2 record and Hazelwood won 11 and lost six. Myers, who will return next season, had a fine 13-3-2 record. He, Baumann and Hazelwood were runner-ups in the Marion sectional tourney. Lettermen Named Five seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and one freshman were named letterman, and student manager Eric Kelly was also named as a letterman. Lettermen named were: seniors — Baumann, , Kalver, Hazelwood, Deane Lehman and Neil Butcher; juniors — Myers, Dave Adams, and Lennie Corral; sophomore — Arthur Ybarra; freshman — Tom Eyanson. Under the new athletic awards system at the school, each of the 12 lettermen will receive 'three points toward athletic awards such as jackets, blankets, and sweaters. Ybarra' received one additional point for his victory in the sectional, the first D. H. S. wrestler ever to cop a sectional title. Six Returnees With six lettermen underclassmen, prospects are bright for another fine season next winter. Myers returns, as does Adams, who had a 12-2-2 record, Sophomore Ybarra won 10 of 17 and victories in the sectional tourney and at New Haven’s tourney, and freshman Eyanson won 10 of 16. No Clear-Cut Favored Team At Fort Wayne ..Third of four stories on probable team alignments by semistate districts in the Indiana high school basketball tourney. By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — A clear-cut favorite is missing in the Northeast semi-state of the Indiana high school basketball tourney; but keep an eye on Elkhart, the South Bend sectional winner, Huntington and Tipton. Elkhart, which battles South Bend Central for NIHSC honors Friday, may have the inside track since the Blue Blazers are at home through the first two tourney weeks. * But anything could happen at the Fort Wayne semi-state. Elkhart has lost only three games, two bf them by one point and the other a 95-69 licking at Gary Roosevelt. The South Bend sectional winner advances to the Elkhart regaional and it should be either Central or Washington. Washington has a better season record than its South Bend city rival, but Central’s Bears, runnersup to Muncie Central for the state title last time, may not surrender without a kingsize struggle. Harmon the Key? Coach Jim Powers’ boys won their last two NIHSC games from Mishawaka and Fort Wayne North in a breeze and have two fine sparkplugs in Jimmy Ward and *Mike Warren. Huntington and Tipton must win on the road early — especially Tipton, which opens sectional warfare at Carmel. The Blue Devils have lost only to_ Elwood and their stock may rise or fpll with the status of Harvey Harmon, their No. 2 scorer and top rebounder sidelined with an ankle injury. From Carmel, Tipton’s tourney path leads to Kokomo, where Dick Barr’s club won early in the season by 20 points. Huntington, which has one of the top “mighty mites” in the state in 5-7 Mike Shumaker, is favored to emerge from the Marion regional district. With the possible exception of Marion’s Giants, no other teams appeared strong enough to challenge the Vikings. Fort Wayne “Open” But an interesting battle is shaping up in the Fort Wayne sectional, where at least three city teams must be reckoned with — Central, Concordia and South. Central got the break m the pairings and can win the 13team preliminaries in three games, with a belated start Friday afternoon. The Summit City sectional winner should have it easier in Roynd 2, gut the semi-state battle, the gateway to the state finals, should be as good as any of the others. The Northeast furnished its last state champion in 1961 when Kokomo edged Indianapolis Manual in overtime. Yellow Jacket Ticket Sale Plans Listed Hugh J. Andrews, Decatur high school principal, this morning announced plans for sale of sectional tickets for the Yellow Jacket fans for the Wednesday night sesI sion of the Adams Central tourney. The tickets, priced at 50 cents, will be sold to student ticket holders Friday morning. Adult season ticket holders may obtain their tickets at the school office • Friday afternoon and Monday during regular school hours. In event any tickets remain, they will be offered to other students Tuesday before any general sale to the public. Tn event the Yellow Jackets win their opener, tickets for the two Saturday sessions will be on sale to season ticket holders at the school office, which will be open until 5 p.m. Friday. Student sons and daughters of adult season ticket holders mav pick no their parents’ tickets if so authorized. Tickets for the two Saturday. sessions are priced at sl.

Davis of Kansas City gave Finley his usual answer — “No.” The American League owners meet Friday to consider what to do about Finley’s failure to heed their order to sign a lease renewal with Kansas City by Feb. 15. The millionaire insurance executive has been threatened with loss of his franchise for failure to comply but the outspoken Finley stated recently: , “When the American League ' season opens, Charles O. Cassius Clay Camp Claims Liston Stale MIAMI BEACH (UPD-Sonny Liston's sudden finish to his sparring preparations drew gleeful shouts today of “stale, stale, the old man's gone stale,” from challenger Cassius Clay and his handlers. Champion Liston had planned to box Wednesday and today, at least, in training for his second defense of the heavyweight crown next Tuesday night at the Miami Beach Convention Hall against Cassius, the Kentucky braggart. Instead, 30-year-old Sonny made a retroactive announcement Wednesday that he had finished his sparring chores on Tuesday. That came as a surprise to the 600 spectators and about 70 sports writers and photographers at the Surfside Community Center. Trainer Willie Reddish explained: “Sonny is right on edge now and we want to keep him sharp that way until time for the fight. He’ll do just enough roadwork and gym exercises to hold the edge.” However, 22-year-old Clay declared: “A lotta worry and a little work made that ugly old bear go green-cheese stale. He didn’t box enough to put a midget in shape — just 91 rounds. He was so scared of me — the greatest —he just turned into a tired old senior citizen, who’ll be goin’ around talkin’ next Wednesday about what a great chapeen he wuz. I said wuz.’ Angelo Dundee,’ challenger Clay’s trainer, expressed amazement. He stated: “As long as I’ve been in boxing, I never heard of any man quitting his sparring a week before an important fight unless he was very stale or hurt in some way.” ’Although Cassius already has sparred 143 rounds, to Sonnys 91, he will not complete his leather-tossing until Saturday, Dundee disclosed.
