' Christ's Humor A new book, “The Humor of Christ,” points out that one type of humor effectively used by Christ to get his points across was the same type on which jokes about Texas are based. This type of humor is called hyperbole, or giantesque.” By making a statement in an exaggerated form, Christ, and others who use the form, made it more memorable; whereas a prosy, qualified statement on the same subject would be. forgotten. No one believes a Texas story literally, but everyone remembers it. Christ used humor effectively to call attention to what would, remain hidden, or unappreciated. The eminent theologian, Dr. Elton Trueblood, professor of theology at Earlham College, used many examples from the Bible. For example, take the two references which Christ made to camels in situations in which it is laughable to think of a camel. One remark was to the Pharisee who took great pains to strain a gnat out of what he was going to drink, and then “swallowed a camel” with its long hairy neck, two humps, knees and big big padded feet — without even noticing. If He had simply said the Pharisee had no sense of proportion, no one would have remembered, emphasizes Trueblood. The other exaggerated camel referernce brings up the humorous picture of a huge camel going through the eye of a needle. Dr. Trueblood says this is the correct translation and it is only the failure of theologians to recognize Christ’s sense of humor that has made them offer other explanations, such as saying Christ did not mean the eye of a sewing needle, but a low gate in Jerusalem. Many moderns thus believe they save the words of Christ from appearing preposterous, says Dr. Trueblood. “What they miss is that there is good reason to suppose Christ meant His words to sound preposterous. We spoil the figure and lose all the robustness, when we tone it down. Christ had a revolutionary message to give and He knew that He could not make Himself understood by speaking mildly . . . Christ’s continual battle for the minds of those about Him required the use of a wide variety of weapons.” Dr. Trueblood writes that he first became aware of the fact that Christ’s remarks are humorous when his four-year-old son burst out laughing at the absurdity of a ma»’» having a “beam” in his * eye. “The child laughs because he has not been brainwashed and blinded to the truly amusing, says Dr. Trueblood, referring to the verse in Mark, “Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.”
