UCLA Scores 19th Straight Win Saturday By MARTIN LADER UPI Sports Writer The tumultuous world of college basketball is fast approaching its feverish climax and the mad rush is on again for conference championshisp and post season tournament berths. It’s less than a month before the start of the NCAA tourney, which produces the national champion, yet not one of the 25 places has been determined as yet. A handful of schools, such as unbeaten and top-ranked UCLA have a virtual lock on a berth, but there’ll be a good deal of scrambling in the next few weeks among the 60 .or more colleges still in strong contention. The Bruins, the only major team still boasting a perfect record, edged California, 58-56, for its 19th straight victory Saturday night. Three See Action Three of the more likely candidates for NCAA berths are in action tonight. Third-ranked Kentucky is at home to Mississippi State, fourth-ranked Wichita plays its most important game of the season at Drake, and seventh-ranked Duke will be at Virginia. Kentucky, which trounced Mississippi, 102-59, Saturday night, is tied with Georgia Tech for the Southeastern Conference 12 Stitches To Sew Up Injured Players A total of twelve stitches were used Saturday evening at the Adams county hospital to close wounds suffered by two Decatur Commodore players in the game at Berne earlier in the evening. Sophomore guard John Lose required seven stitches to close a severe cut to his lower lip, and senior guard Dick Omlor needed five stitches to close a gash on the left side of the nose, near the eye. Omlor had a “shiner” around the left eye, and was barely able to see through the swelling Sunday. Both are expected tq be ready for Friday’s game with Harlan. The Wolverines meet Indiana next Saturday. « Fifth-ranked Davidson was idle over the weekend and will be seeking to protect its Southern Conference lead against •Richmond on Tuesday and Furman Thursday. Villanova, the No. 6 team and in search of an NCAA atlarge berth, had more trouble than it bargained for Saturday. Villanova plays Duquesne Wednesday and Canisius next Saturday. Eighth - ranked Vanderbilt fought off Louisiana State, 66-64 Saturday, ninth-ranked Loyola of Chicago was upset by St. John’s, 71-69, and lOth-ranked Oregon State beat Portland, 95-61. Mom, Sew This!
