Yellow Jackets Surprise Garrett With 59 -56 Win; Commodores Beat Fremont

vHI A AVW JACKETS By Pete Reynolds Bill McCully's downtrodden Yellow Jackets, rising to the heights Friday night, battled their way to a big 59-56 victory over the heavily favored Garrett Railroaders at the Decatur gym. It was the third triumph of the season for the Jackets as contrasted to 14 setbacks, while for Garrett, it was only the sixth loss in 18 starts. It was also the final Northeastern Indiana conference tilt for the Jackets, leaving them with a 3-6 record in NEIC play, with all their victories, oddly enough, coming against conference foes. The YeUow Jackets opened up an eight-point gap late in the first quarter, but the Railroaders came storming back to go ahead in the second period, and it was a nip and tuck, rough and at times ragged struggle the rest of the way. After the scores at 2-2, 4-4, 5-5 and 7-7, the Jackets scored the next eight points and had a 157 lead late in the opening period, which Garrett cut to 15-9 at the end of the stanza. Craig McEwan, playing the best game of his career, dropped in a free throw in the early going in the second quarter, but the Railroaders, on a pair of free throws by Jim White and two field foals and a foul toss by George Hathaway, worked into a 16-16 tie after less than two minutes of the quarter. The rivals were tied on four more occasions before 6-10 Charley Bavis dropepd in his third two- pointer of the period to give Garrett a 28-26 lead at halftime. The Railroaders led throughout most of the third stanza, although the score was tied four times, before Dave Hammond’s only field goal of the game shot the Jackets on top, 44-43, with 40 seconds to go. Sam Blythe's free throw made it two points but White’s fielder knotted the teams at 45-45 at the end of the quarter. The final, bruising period saw the teams tied at 47-47, 51-51, and 55-55, the later with 2:15 to play. With 1:18 to go, Greg Ladd put the Jackets on top to stay with a free, throw. With 40 seconds left, McEwan dropped in a brace of free throws for a 58-55 advantage. With only 13 seconds to play, Blythe iced it with another free throw, and Hathaway added Garrett’s final point on a four Dave Fox May Play By Sectional Time Dave Fax, the injured Berne high school center, may be available for the sectional tournament the last week of February, it has been learned from Berne coach Sanford Brueekenheimer.... Fox, 6-2 center, was injured about a month ago when he broke his ankle in a game with Fort Wayne Central Catholic. It was thought then that he would not be able to return in time for the sectional. A specialist, however, says there is now a good chance that the ankle may be healed in time to allow Fox to play in the meet ’ Practical Idea It’s a very practical idea, when you take down curtain rods, towel racks, and similar fixtures prior to painting or moving, to tape all loose hardware to the large pieces with cellophane tape. Then you’ll know exactly what belongs to what when you put them up again. - •.

COMMODORES By Bob Shraluka Sparked by the sensational shooting of veteran Ed Kohne, the Decatur Catholic Commodores made a long, long trip well worthwhile Friday evening, as they jumped back on the winning trail with a 79-69 win over the Eagles of Fremont. After having their seven game win streak snapped a week ago, the Commodores never let the Eagles get off the ground last night as they rolled up a 23 point lead early in the fourth period and coasted home to their 12th victory against just five losses. Fremont was hot from the field in the first period that saw them dump in 23 points for a 23-18 advantage entering the second quarter. The Commodores led five times in the period, Fremont twice and the score was tied four times. By the time the second period began, however, the green and gold boys of Coach George Waning had worked the kinks out of their legs from the long ride and on the sniping of Kohne began to take control of the contest. Hits Five Straight Kohne’s bucket at 6:21 of the second stanza tied the score at 25-25, and the senior veteran hit another four in a row, plus a free throw to counteract three Fremont fielders and put the Commodores into a 34-31 lead. Kohne then became slightly sick and was forced to leave the contest for a minute and a half, but his teammates were now fired up and quickly picked up the slack. Terry Myers scored twice on rebound efforts, Dan Lose tossed in a long one-hander and Larry Gase also popped a one-hander, before Sellers hit two free throws for the Eagles. Myers tossed in a one-hander from the corner with 33 seconds remaining and the Commodores took a 44-33 lead to the dressing room at the halftime. Buckets by the Lose boys, Dan and John, a basket by Myers and three points by floor general Dick Omlor catapulted the Commodores into a 53-36 lead which they built to a big 65-45 entering the final eight minutes. Early in the final stanza the Decaturites built their lead to 68-45, before Fremont began battling to get the ball and through some inept officiating were getting away with obvious fouls to steal the ball numerous times. With 29 seconds remaining, Chapin’s free throw chopped the Commodore lead to seven points, 74-67, but for Fremont it was “too little too late,” and their seventh loss in 17 games.
