Yellow Jackets Downed In Close Battle Saturday By Ossian Bears, 73-67
By Pete Reynolds The downtrodden Decatur Yellow Jackets, battling their hearts out in an effort to stop their latest losing streak, finally bowed Cardinals Win Over Marion Bennett Five The Geneva Cardinals built up a good first-half lead and carried on to defeat Marion Bennett, 6054, at the Geneva gym Saturday night, it brought the Cardinals* season record to seven victories and eight defeats. The Cardinals held a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased their advantage to 40-26 at the half. Marion managed to cut the margin to 50-41 at the third period but the Cardinals hung on for their triumph. to the tough Ossian Bean, 73-67, at the Decatur gym Saturday night It was the Jackets’ fifth loss in a row and their 14th setback of the season to go with only two triumphs. * For Ossian, it was the Bears* 14th straight victory and their 15th triumph in 16 start*. The Beans drew first blood Saturday when Tony Kaufman and Terry Dishong hit field goals in the first 45 seconds of play. But Craig McEwan’s two-pointer and a three-point play by Greg Ladd put Decatur on top, 54, less than a minute later. and Decatur had a 15-6 advantage with 4:14 to go in the period. The Wells county lads came storming back, however, and worked into ties at 17-17 and 1919, but Blythe’s basket gave the Jackets a 21-19 lead at the end of the period. The teams battled to four different tie scores in the second quarter, but the Bears, mainly through converting nine free throws, carried a 40-33 bulge to the dressing room at the half. Ossian once built its Lead to 14 points in the third bracket, which the Jackets reduced to eight, 5648, at the end of the period. But Bill McColly’s lads weren’t done fighting. They had the Ossian advantage down to 67-61 with 1:33 to play. Ken Riffle hit his only fielder and Max Elliott drove in for his third one, and the Jackets trailed by only two, 67-65, with 1:08 to go. With 50 seconds left, Dan Cotton clicked on his seventh field goal. In the waning seconds, Kaufman converted four straight free throws and Springer dropped in a layup for Ossian’s final six-point margin. Greg Ladd led all scorers in the game with 23 points, but Elliott, with 11, was the only other Jacket in double figures. The Bears had all five starters above the 10-point mark, Dishong leading with 20, Cotton scoring 17, Kaufman 14, and Elzey and Springer each 11. Ossian won the contest at the free throw line, as the Jackets hit one more from the field than the Bears. Ossianj converted 21 of 31 foul tosses, the Jackets 13 of 22, as 24 fouls were blown on Decatur, 16 on Ossian. The Yejllow Jackets will wind up their* Northeastern Indiana conference schedule Friday night, hosting the tall Garrett Railroaders at the Decatur gym. Tuesday’s lone game will send the Geneva Cardinals to Adams Central to meet the Flying Jets, winningest team in the county with a 12-4 record. —oOo—The Decatur Yellow Jackets, with their poorest season record in many years, will wind np their Northeastern Indiana conference schedule Friday night when they host the tall Garrett Railroaders at the Decatur gym. Garrett had a long winning streak snapped Saturday night. The Railroaders are currently fourth in the NIEC race. All six county teams will be in action Friday. In addition to the Decatur-Garrett clash, the Commodores make the long jaunt to Fremont, Auburn plays at Adams Central, Monmouth is at Huntington township, Berne moves over to Elmhurst, and Geneva travels to Ossian. Saturday’s lone encounter should jam the Berne gym when the Bears entertain the Decatur Commodores. The Concordia Cadets strengthened their bid for the Northeastern Indiana conference title last week with a decisive victory over the Columbia City Eagles. The Cadets are on top with a 7-1 mark. New Haven is second at 4-1 and Elmhurst third at 3-1. Three league games are scheduled this week, New Haven at Bluffton Tuesday, and Garrett at. Decatur and Angola at Kendallville Friday. (UPI) — Jimmy Demaret blew an 18-inch putt on the first play-off hole and it cost him $3,500, but he could still smile today about his loss to young Tommy Jacobs for the Palm Springs golf classic title. Demaret, who admits to 53 summers, and Jacobs, 29, were tied at the end of the regulation 90 holes in this marathon event Sunday and Jacobs picked up first prize money of $7,500, leaving Demaret with second money of $4,000. Jacobs was in trouble on the first hole of the playoff when his second shot landed in behind a tree. Demaret was on the green in three on the 510yard par-five hole and he lagged his first putt to within 18 inches of the pin. He took a long tithe addressing the ball and then missed, taking a bogey, as did Jacobs. “That was just a bad putt,” said Demaret afterwards. “I was pretty disgusted with myself.’ Then he laughed and added, “Tommy’s a good boy. I’ve got a lot of years left and he’s about through. Actually, I juSt ran out of steam.” On the second extra hole, Demaret’s tee shot hit pne of the estimated 6,000 spectators swarming around Jhe,, golfers while Jacobs got on the green and two-putted for a par-three. By then, Demaret was lying three on the green so it was all over. Jacobs also won $1,132 in the pro-am phase of the tournament, taking home a total of $8,632. \He and Demaret had 90-hole scores of 353 — seven under par. Jacobs had rounds of 66-74-74-69-70; Demaret, 75-68-67-72-71. Don January, the slender Texan, and southpaw Bob Charles, reigning British Open king from New Zealand, finished in a tie for third at 354 and pach won $3,100. Next, at 355, and winners of $2,450 each were Bob Goalby and young Chuck Courtney,
Berne Junior High Wins Tournament Berne won its four-team junior high tourney Saturday by defeating Bluffton by a 47-46 score in overtime .after Geneva had downed Decatur by a 35-30 court in the consolation match. Berne led, 13-9, 21-19 and 31-30 at the period stops, but Bluffton rallied to tie the score at 43-43, only to lose in the overtime. Thompson led the winners’ scoring with 11 tallies and Schwartz added 10. Kain topped Bluffton with 12 and Talbert added 11. Geneva grabbed an 8-6 first period lead which they built to 17-13 enroute to their consolation win over Decatur. Bixler led the Geneva scoring with 11 markers, and Bob Schwartz and Scott Townsend were high for Decatur with six apiece. In the opening round games, Bluffton walloped Geneva by a 54-40 count, and Berne edged Decatur, 39-31. Berne led 13-9 after the first stop, but Decatur rallied to tie the score at 20-20 at the half. The hosts regained the lead at 29-24 entering she last period. Thompson led all scorers with 12 tallies and Don Williams’ 10 topped Decatur. Decatur Wrestlers • •• Lose Final Match
A rugged and experienced Culver Military Academy team hung a 30-19 defeat on the Decatur high school wrestlers Saturday afternoon in the local gymnasium, as the two teams staged some of the finest wrestling ever seen here. The match brought the curtain down on the local team’s regular season—a season which saw them win 10 matches and lose only three for a percentage of .769. The three defeats were suffered at the hands of Culver and the two Muncie schools, Central and South. Coach Gary Giessler will keep his grapplers at work this week in preparation for the sectional Saturday. The Decatur team will compete in the Marion sectional, with further details due to be released tomorrow. Hie strong Culver team had to come from behind to beat the local grapplers Saturday as Decatur held the lead through the first six matches. Decatur was in contention until the final two bouts, as the two teams displayed some of the finest wrestling ever witnessed in this gymnasium. Eyanson Pins Tom Eyanson, a freshman who turned into one of the team’s best during the course of the season, got his club into a five-point lead when he pinned Lindley with a minute gone in the 95-pound class. The win gave Eyanson & most-impressive record of 10-5 for the season with seven pins. Faulk was awarded a one-point win over Arthur Ybarra in the 103 weight, winning on the basis of riding time after the two had battled to a 7-7 standoff. Senior veteran Alan Kalver then put the finishing touches on an outstanding career with a 3-2 decision over Scrage in the 112 class, also on the basis of more riding time. Kalver thus finished with a 13-2 record and the most wins on the squad. In a spectacular 120 weight battle, Gary Myers and Mcßay of Culver battled to a 0-0 tie, as neither wrestler would allow the other to score. This gave Myers, a junior, an 11-2-2 season record, and left his team with a 10-5 lead. Dave Adams and JacObs of the visitors battled to *. 2-2 draw, each scoring on a reversal, In another exciting battle. Junior Adams ended his season with a 12-1-2 mark. Bird of Culver got two points for a takedown and two for a reversal to best Decatur’s Neil Butcher in the 133 class by a 4-1 score. Culver then got its first lead at 15-12 as Hayward pinned Dave Green with three seconds remaining in the 138 class. Baumann Winner Senior Sam Baumann put his team back in the lead, however, as he too ended a three-year career with a brilliant finish. Trailing by a point in the second period, Baumann took Rosenberg to the mat and pinned him with a minute left in the period. It was his 12th win against just one loss and one tie. Culver regained the lead when Thrower pinned Deoatur’s Bill Blythe with 47 seconds remaining in the 154 class. Blythe, who has been wrestling just six ,u eeks, was making his first varsity start in place of Tim Magley, who was ill. Senior Deane Lehman ended

Culver finally clinched the victory when Miller decisioned Darryl Grote in the 180 class by a 3-1 score, giving the academy squad a 25-19 lead. Hinkle, rugged Culver heavyweight, ended the match by pinning Steve Hazelwood in the second period, to set the final margin at 30-19. After the match here. Culver left for Fort Wayne, where they thumped Central Catholic by a 54-0 score in the evening. Four Decatur reserves outpointed Culver in a preliminary. Brooks pinned Bob Hawkins in the second period, but Kip Lutes, Dal Whittenfeld, and Andry Crider were all victorious. All three won with third period pins.
