Yellow Jackets Defeated By Portland; Win Streak Os Commodores Is Halted

COMMODORES By Bob Shraluka A hot-shooting Crestview Knights quintet blitzed the nets for 52 points in the second half and snapped the Decatur Commodores’ seven-game winning streak with an 84-74 victory in the Ohio gymnasium Friday night. After trailing by two points at halftime, the Knights poured 27 points through the hoop in the third quarter to offset some good Commodore scoring, and then continued their assault with 25 more tallies in the final quarter. Both clubs were cold from the field in the first period, but five points in the final 28 seconds of play in the first stanza gave the Knights a 17-12 advantage entering the second period. The Knights held their lead at three to five points through round two, until Barney Schultz pumped in two buckets in just eight seconds at the 2:20 mark to cut the Commodore deficit to 27-26. The Ohio quintet built their lead to 32-28, but John Lose's basket with 17 seconds remaining tied the score at 32-32, and Dan Lose tossed in a long one-hander at the gun to give the Commodores their first lead since early in the game and a 34-32 lead at die main intermission. Scoring Begins Ed Kohne opened the third quarter with a jump shot, but then the blitz began. The Commodores were hot, but the Knights were even hotter. In the first four minutes of the period, Crestview tallied 15 times and Decatur 11. and the Knights ted, 47-45. Led by junior Ted Saylor, who didn’t start the game, the Ohioans threw a relentless attack at the Commodores. Saylors hit six of six from the right corner in the period, and sophomore Ron Rase tossed in another 10 for a 59-55 Knight lead entering the final eight minutes. Between them, the two clubs scored 48 points in the eight minutes. The Commodores stayed within six points in the last stanza, but three free throws by Charles Etzler and a fielder by Saylor put the Knights into a commanding 70-61 lead with 4:24 to play, and Decatur never got any closer than five points the rest of the way. The defeat was the first suffered by the Commodores this year, as they last lost on December 26 by two points to Geneva. Crestview looked much better than its 4-7 record prior to last night’s contest. Saylor's 22 tallies led all scorers and Rase was close behind with 21, while Sheets added another 16. Five Commodores hit twin figures, led by Schultz’ 16. The Commodores didn’t get many ’’breaks” from the officials, as they outscored the Knights 33-30 from the field, but were outscored by a 24-8 margin from the foul stripe. Twentythree personals were whistled cn the green and gold and Crestview shot 31 charities, while only 14 fouls were called on the home club and the Commodores got just 14 free chances. George Waning's quintet, with a 12-5 season mark, is on the road twice next week, traveling to Fremont Friday and Berne Saturday. D. H. S.
