No, it’s not water, not industry, it’s people without jobs! In the 1960 census, only one county in the state ranked below our 2% unemployed rate, which is almost impossible when you consider that this includes women who only want to work part of the year, and men who are retiring and drawing their S3O a week unemployment—yes, that’s the average unemployment check this area. , We not only have the finest in schools, libraries, and churches, even our drinking water is the best! Oh, it may taste a little strange at first, but recent surveys of the county by the state board of health under Dr. C. W. Gish, dental health director, show that the children in Adams county have 61% fewer tooth cavities than those where river water, rather than deepwell water, is drunk. In checking mortality records, Adams county actually had a slightly lower rate of deaths from heart ailments, and no difference in the other rates. In church attendance and activity, Adams county ranks well above the state and national average. Yet it is not a bigoted city, and people of a wide range of religious belief lives in peace and harmony here, as their religions teach them. With parks, lakes, golf courses, bowling, picnic areas all within easy reach of any part of the county, Decatur is a fine residential city. For the services given by its tax units — schools, streets, sewage disposal, and many others — its tax rate is quite reasonable. Decatur can expect an increasing growth and business, do to its location, and its makeup. You can help, of course, because our city is what YOU make it! Editorial written byDick Heller TV PROGRAMS
