State In Strenuous Week For Politics
INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—lndian* is in the middle of the most strenuous political week since the city elections last fall. On Monday night, Rep. Donald C. Bruce, Indianapolis conservative, announced his decision to run for the Republican nomination for U.S. senator. Other GOP senatorial aspirants are State Sen. D. Russell Bontrager of < Elkhart, president pro tem of the 1963 Senate, and former State Sen. Edgar D. Whitcomb, Seymour attorney. Today, Roger D. Branigin, Lafayette attorney, is scheduled to announce his candidacy for , the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and perhaps soon to become the front man for that nomination. Announced opponents for the 61-year-old lawyer to date are State Sen. Marshall F. Kizer of Plymouth, Senate minority leader; Thomas L. Lemon, former mayor of Bloomington; Sticking Door Before planing a door that persistently stickaat a certain spot, use a piece of colored chalk to chalk the inside of the door jamb. When the door is closed, the chalk will rub off on the door whereever it binds, thus marking the part that needs planing. |1 *Hh I V B ■JW Bw- ’**>*-- “ - >•- * * i . State Rep. Robert L. Rock of Anderson, House minority leader, and William Fortune of Carmel, former state treasurer. Ctov. Scranton Hera Tonight, Hoosier Republicans will have their first glimpse of Pennsylvania Gov. William W. Scranton whose status as a compromise choice for the GOP presidential or vice-presidential nomination appears to be on the rise. ' Scranton will address a 1100-a-plate Republican fund-raising dinner in Indianapolis. The date was made by the national committee, not by Hoogier party officials. The oratory of Scranton will be part of a 21-city closed circuit television hookup which will last one hour. Sen. Barry M. Goldwater will speak from Pittsburgh, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller from Los Angeles, former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon from New York, Michigan Gov. George Romney from Washington, Kentucky Sen. Thruston B. Morton from Houston, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower from Detroit and National Chairmas William E. Miller from Cleveland. All except Ike and Miller are announced or potential candidates for the two top spots on the ticket. Democrats* Party On Saturday night, Democrats will stage a huge party in Indianapolis in observance of the 36th birthday anniversary of Sen. Birch E. Bayh, Jr. Actress Janet Leigh will sing, dance and perform at the party which will have an attendance goal of 5,000. Mrs. Milton Berle, wife of the comedian, will be producer. Sammy Cahn, leading song writer and three-time Academy Award winner, has written special material for Miss Leigh and other entertainers. Next week, Kentucky’s youthful Gov. Edward T. Breathitt, Jr., will speak at a Roosevelt Day dinner of the Marion County Young Democrats. It will be held the night of Feb. 7 in Indianapolis. Breathitt beat former Gov. A.B. Happy Chandler in the 1962 Democratic primary. In the election contest, he used the noted Birch Bayh jingle song in defeating his GOP rival.

have a new sister, Elizabeth. — D. H. S. — With the format planned, a theme chosen, and the pages laid out, Tom Baxter, editor of the yearbook, “Ravelings,” is making plans for orders to be placed during this week. The three upper classes place their requests with Mr. Smith, while the freshmen order from Mr. Clayton. The entire fee is $4, with the minimum down payment being $2. - D. H. S. - With a subdued and more adult outlook, the upper classmen observed the beginning of a new tradition at D. H. S. last Friday. Sponsored by the student council dress-up day instilled a changed atmosphere into the school, accomplishing its purpose. As the first of such days, it was an experiment, but now the student council plans to schedule one such every month, with all the classes participating. Students took a new look at their classmates, realizing the anticipation of citizenship in the world of the adult. There was less loitering, more silence in the halls, more courtesy, and one of the teachers rushed home at noon to put on a tie and white shirt. — D. H. S. - Featuring four different bands from the Decatur school system, the concert last Sunday attracted an audience of about 250 people. The dance band opened the program with a march feaurting the high school twirlers and then presented three others numbers. Then the sixth grade band and the seventh grade band each played four numbers. For the final part of the program, the high school band entertained, featuring as soloists Tom Baxter on the trumpet and Margaret Cook on the clarinet. — D. H. S. — At the first meeting of the Color Wheel, the art club of D. H. S., the following officers were elected: president, Kathy Weidler; vice president, David Wynn; secretary, Jane Jacobs; and treasurer, Becky Mauller. Headed by these aspiring artists, the group is planning a trip to Chicago to view the art treasurers there. The advisor is Mr, Feasel. — D. H. S. - Craig McEwan, well-known D.
