Decatur Wrestlers Win * Over Tough Marion Team Tuesday Night, 25 To 19
Three years of hard work and long hours paid off for coach Gary Giessler Tuesday night, who watched his Decatur high school wrestling team turn in a supreme effort in whipping Marion by a score of 25-19 in the Marion gymnasium. Giessler started the sport here in the 1961-62 season and his team won once and gave several good accounts in other matches. In his second year, his team broke even, winning six and losing six. This season they had won six of eight matches, but after those 13 previous wins, he said that Tuesday night’s, “was by far my biggest thrill. '4 Decatur lost to Muncie South by a convincing 31-9 score back in December for their first loss of the season. A short time later, Marion had beaten the same Muncie South team by a 33-16 score, so Decatur wasn’t given much of a chance scoring too many points, let along winning, last night. But 95-pounder Tom Eyanson pinned his opponent in the second period of the match and the Decaturites never trailed the rest of the way. They built up a 22-8 lead with some outstanding performances, before Marion began to rally. Hazelwood Clinches After they had narrowed the gap to 22-19, all rested on the broad shoulders of big Steve Hazelwood, who had been pinned in his last two matches. Tuesday, however, Hazelwood rose to the occasion, as he recorded a one-point decision to clinch the victory for the local grapplers. After finishing a disappointing and distant second in the New Haven tourney the Decatur team battled their Mafion foes with a vengeance. The victory gave the Decatur lads a fine 7 win, 2 loss mark for the season with four matches remaining on the season schedule. Coach Giessler and his crew take a brief rest today and swing right* back into action Thursday night when they entertain Angola at the Decatur gym, scheduled „ to start at 7 p.m,--.ln ary, the Decatur reserves will wrestle the Union City varsity, starting at 5:30 p.m. Eyanson and Gardner were tied at 2-2 when the little Decatur grapplcr pinned his foe with just 22 seconds gone in the second period, jumping his club, into a 5-0 lead which they never lost. Questionable Loss Marion got five points in the 103 weight when Saylors won a forfeit over Arthur Ybarra, who was a bit overweight, according to Marion scales. Ybarra had weighed in before leaving and was at his weight, but Marion still claimer a forfeit and received five points. It was a tough break . for Ybarra who wrestled Saylors anyway, and had won a 3-2 decision, that, of course, didn't count. Alan Kalver put Decatur back into the lead when he garnered seven quick points and hung on for a 7-3, decision over Johnson in the 112 class. The win was the ninth in. 11 matches for the -veteran senior. Gary Myers and Dave Adams boosted the Decatur team’s lead to 14-5 as each posted 9-4 decisions over their opponents. Myers got five points in the first period and went on to his eighth win of the year against two losses and a tie. Adams got behind 2-0 in the first period, but tied the score in the second and picked up five points College Basketball Purdue 112, Notre Dame 103 (two overtimes), Michigan 80, Minnesota 66. — Earlham 75, Hanover 63. on a reversal and near-pin early in the third period enroute to his ninth win of the year against a single loss and a tie. Adams and Kalved are tied for the most wins on the team, and Adams owns the best winning percentage. Lennie Corral gave his best performance of the season in the 133 class, as he needed just a minute and 22 seconds to pin Adrenson of Marion. The win evened Corral’s record at 5-5 and boosted his team’s lead in the match to 19-5. Dave Green and Mansfield of Marion put on a good show in their 138 match, with Mansfield winning a 4-0 decision and cutting the Decatur lead to 19-8. Sam Baumann chalked up his eighth win against a loss and a tie this year by copping a 44) decision over Hunter in the 145 class. Baumann £ot two points for a first period takedown and two more for a third period reversal. Trailing 22-8, Marion began to narrow the gap as Myers outlasted Tim Magley in the 154 division for an 8-7 decision. Trailing 8-4, Magley got three points in the third period but couldn’t get the tying point. Andrew, Marion’s best wrestler, got five pointe in the final period and recorded a 7-2 decision overDeane Lehman of Decatur, and when Guinn pinned Darryl Grote of Decatur in the 180 class in the first period, Decatur led only 2219. It was then left to Hazelwood. A pin for his opponent would give Marion the match and a decision would tie the match. Schultz got a point in the second period but Hazelwood got two for a third
Purdue Edges Notre Dame In Two Overtimes By United Press Inernational Some people claim John Jordan acted in haste when he resigned as Notre Dame basketball coach earlier this month. Jordan himself will admit today that he wasn’t hasty enough. Jordan, an alumnus of Notre Dame and head coach since 1951,,,. gave up in anger when he was hanged in effigy two weeks ago and announced he would leave his post at the end of the current season. The situation has gotten even worse since, then and Jordan must be wondering how long a season can be. ' ~ - ■ The Irish went into double overtime against Purdue Tuesday night before suffering ,JL 112-103 defeat at Fort Wayne. It was the second time in eight days Notre Dame has -lost a game although scoring more than 100 points and marked the third time it has happened this season. Dave Schellhase was the Purdue hero, scoring seven straight points in the second overtime for a game total of 43. Things were more normal at Ann Arbor, where third-ranked Michigan remained unbeaten in Big Ten competition by beating Minnesota, 80-66. The Wolverines led all the way after the first minute of play before a sell-out crowd of 7,890. Cazzie Russell scored 25 points for Michigan and Bill Buntin contributed 23 as the Wolverines recorded their 13th victory against one defeat. Mel Northway led Minnesota with 19 points. Palmer, Nicklaus Favored In Lucky SAN FRANCISCO (UPD—The $50,000 Lucky International golf tournament opens Friday with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, who haven’t won enough between them to pay caddy fees so far this year, listed as the co-favorites. The winners of all three tournaments in 1964, Paul Harney, Art Wall and Tony Lerna, are in the starting lineup. But all take a back seat to the awesome duo of Palmer and Nicklaus. The chances are that the winner will have to be a good mudder. The Harding Park course has been soaked with heavy rains the past week. Andthe forecast is for continued rains today. The public course, laid alongside Lake Merced, is a half mile from the Pacific Ocean—so there is some shelter from the winds. The defending champion is Jackie Burke, the veteran Texan who plays in only a few tournaments a year. He isn’t counted upon to be a major threat this time — although he always plays Harding Park well. Both Nicklaus and Palmer failed to make the cut at Pebble Beach and aren’t rated at the peak of their game. Palmer eliminated himself at Pebble during the third round. Nicklaus didn’t appear to feel too unhappy about his showing in the Crosby He had just come ip from Florida, where he had spent a month fishing — and playing a little golf with his wife, who isp’t the best teacher in the world. Chicago Cubs Lead In Signing Players By United Press International The Chicago Cubs are showing their annual talent for running up a big lead in the contract derby. Usually the first team in the majors to complete signing their roster, the Cubs announced Tuesday that they have come to terms with 20 of their 37 players. The two most recent players to agree to 1964 terms are pitchers Glen Hobbie and Cal Koonce. Hobbie, 27, had a 7-10 won-lost record and a 3.93 earned run average last season while Koonce had a 2-6 mark and a 4.56 ERA. The Cleveland Indians announced the signing of catcher Joe Azcue and pitcher Ted Abernathy, giving them 14 players under contract. Azcue hit .285 in 94 games and Abernathy had a 7-2 record last season. The Cincinnati Reds’ satisfied list rose to six with the signing of shortstop Leo Cardenas, pitcher John Flavin, shortstop Tommy.. ...Helms-andcatchers Larry Himes and Hal Smith. Most important.. among them is Cardenas, who hit .235 but led National League shortstops with a .972 fielding average in 1963. Gary Roosevelt Still Tops In Prep Rankings By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press international INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—The Indiana high school basketball elite continued its game of musical chairs today, but Gary Roosevelt remained No. 1 in the UPI coaches' board ratings. The Panthers, going into this week’s schedule with a 13-1 record, received 11 of 20 first-place votes and a total of 174 to beat unbeaten runnerup Columbus by 10 points. Columbus, with six first places, climbed from third place to second with 164 points. Unbeaten Tipton, rapidly becoming the top sensation of the season, was promoted from fourth to third and trailed Columbus by just five votes. Victories over previously unde- , seated Huntington and Oak Hill last week helped Tipton’s cause, although the Central Conference leaders polled only one first-place vote. Lafayette Slips Lafayette, runnerup last week, was demoted to fourth and received the two other first-place votes. Although unbeaten since Tipton licked them in their holiday tourney, the Bronchos presumably slipped because both Columbus and Tipton have unblemished records. Indianapolis cit y tourney champ Washington rounds out the upper bracket of the “Big 10” in fifth place. The unbeaten Continentals were eighth last week. The lower bracket berths also had new occupants. Anderson, idle last week, slipped from fifth to sixth place, Huntington moved up from seventh to a tie for sixth, Indianapolis Tech skidded from sixth to eighth after getting bumped from the perfect ranks by city foe Washington, Elkhart climbed from 10th to ninth, switching spots with Kokomo, which dropped one notch after being upset by Fort Wayne North. The field this week was limited to just 19 quintets. Columbia City, East Chicago Roosevelt and South Bend Central were dropped since last week. Eagles' New Owner Seeking New Coach PHILADELPHIA (UPI)-Jer-ry Wolman, who acquired $36 million in his 36 years and the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, was looking for a new head coach today, Wolman, a 36-year-old Washington, D.C. builder, officially became the new owner of the National Football League club Tuesday and announced that head Coach Nick Skorich was not being retained. Skorich, whose three-year contract with the Eagles expiresin 10days, was told by Wolman in Pittsburgh last Sunday that he planned a coaching change, the new owner said. Among those mentioned as possible successors to Skorich were former Cleveland Browns head Coach Paul Brown and Joe Kuharich, former head coach of the Washington Redskins and Notre Dame and now a member of the official staff of NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. Wolman said he has talked to a third rrtan he identified only “as a free agent, a former head coach in the National Football L e ague, not now coaching in the league, not coaching anywhere.” 2L Wolman, who paid $5.5 million for the franchise in outbidding several other groups last December, said there is “no definite selection yet” of a coach. He added that no decision will be made until after the mid-winter league meeting in t ,Miami next ’Tuesday. Wolman, a native of Shenandoah, Pa., and a boyhood fan of the Eagles, said Rozelle called him Monday night to tell him that his bid to buy the Eagles from a group of local stockholders had been accepted by the other league owners.
Decatur Commodores Whip Union, Huntington County, By 87 To 55 Score Tuesday
By Pete Reynolds The Decatur Commodores, roaring to a 14-1 lead in the first three minutes of play, rode roughshod over the Union Sharpshooters from Huntington county, 87-55, at the Decatur gym Tuesday night. It was tiie sixth consecutive victory for the Commodores and their 10th triumph in contrast to only four defeats on the season. Fielders by Terry Myers, Jim Schultz and Dick Omlor in the first minute and 15 seconds got the Commodores away to a 6-0 lead, and Omlor’s second bucket made it 8-0 before lanky Steve Platt dropped in a free toss for Union's first point. Schultz hit two more field goals and Dan Lose one after only three minutes had elapsed and the Decatur boys had a big 14-1 margin before Tim Shafer connected for Union’s first fielder. All six players used by George Waning in the first quarter scored as the Commodores had a nine-point edge, 19-10, by the end of the period. Union could score only 10 points again in the second stanza, while the Commodores, with the six players dividing honors, poured in 21 iparkens to stack up a big 20-point bulge at 40-20 at the long intermission.
