Frank Gifford Joins East In NFL Pro Bowl LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Seasoned pro Frank- Gifford of the New York Giants joined the East squad today in a practice session for Sunday's Pro Bowl game at the Memorial Coliseum — the National Football League’s battle of All-Stars. Gifford was named Thursday to fill a vacancy created on Coach Allie Sherman’s team because of a twisted knee suffered by flanker Buddy Dial. Dial, who was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to Dallas at the season’s end, was sent to his Houston home for treatment of his injury incurred in practice Thursday. Dial will be replaced in the starting lineup by Bobby Mitchell of the Washington Redskins. St. Louis’ 25-year-old quarterback Charley Johnson will head »the starting backfield for the East, which also includes fullback Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns and halfback Tim Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles. ' ■_ West Coach George Halas Thursday nominated veteran Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts as his starting quarteradded that he will alternate his own Chicago Bear signal-caller," Billy Wade, with Unitas, quarter by quarter. Unitas, awarded the Pro Bowl’s George Halas Trophy twice, will be backed by fullback Jim Taylor of the Green Bay Packers, halfback Tommy Mason of Minnesota and flanker Terry Barr of Detroit. The West, coached for the first time by Halas, is rated a 6% point favorite. Rabbit Season Is. Ended In Indiana - Today is the final day for hunting rabbits in Indiana, and the trapping and coon-hunting season ends at noon Jan. 31. Jack Hurst, conservation officer, announced this morning. The number of hunters was low this year, probably due to the Cyclical decrease , in rabbits, Hurst explained. In addition, with many fence rows cut down or mowed, wildlife has a hard time finding cover. Pheasants were also scarce this year. but A total of 5585 was paid out during 1963 for fox bounties by the county auditor, Hurst' added, for 195 foxes killed. The January kill was lower than a year ago. probably because of the dry weather; this has resulted in dry drain tiles,« where the foxes hide. This past Saturday, however, the Blue Creek-St. Mary’s hunt caught two foxes, he added. Pro Basketball Philadelphia 122, St. Louis 115. Detroit 125, Baltimore 115. San' Francisco 112, New York 97,.

So today, Bob Rosburg, one of golf’s all-time greatest on the greens, is leading the $30,000 San Diego Open golf tournament. At least that was the situation as of early this morning. Rosburg, former PGA champion who hasn’t won a title in three years, fired a four-under-par 66 Thursday to take a one- .. .stroke lead over the field. But 30 golfers were caught by the darkness and were unable to finish their rounds. Among those still on the links when night closed in were Jerry Barber and Frank Beard, who had 335, and Dow Finst.erwald, who had a 34. There were 27 others still out who tee off this morning before regular play opens. And the chances are that the greens will be icy again and start of play will be delayed an hour or so today — as it was Thursday. • The greens at the Rancho Bernardo course are among the largest in the world, ana this may have played into Rosburg’s hancT While others were threeputting from as far away as 200 feet, Rosburg was knocking in putts from all over. “I was horrible on that tee,’’ said the former Stanford University star who is 37 years old. “I hit only three good drives all day, but I kept in bounds, and that helped.” Tied for second place behind Rosburg were Tony Lerna, glamor boy of the 1963 tour; National Open champion Julius Boros; and a fellow named Charles Coody, who isn’t very well known outside his - native state of Texas. ' > At 68 came British PGA champion , Peter Butler, making his, first fling at golf in United States; Canadian George Knudson and Tommy Bolt. Ohio Stale And Minnesota To Meet Saturday CHICAGO (UPI) — The two top scorers in Big Ten basketball will match shots Saturday when Ohio State, one of the preseason favorites, and darkhorse Minnesota meet with a share of first place at stake. Leading the Gophers wiU be sophomore Lou Hudson, who dropped 36 points in his only previous outing for first place in scoring, while Ohio State will depend on Gary Bradds, last year’s scoring champion who netted 32 point* in his only start for the runner-up position. Bradds has the best per game scoring average in the league, 26.6 points for 11 games, while Hudson for the entire season of 11 games has averaged 18.8. Another game also involves a share of the league lead, the televised contest between Illinois and lowa, each boasting a 1-0 record. The lUini, cochampions of the circuit last year with Ohio State, could be handicapped by the injury of center Skip Thoren, although he has played at partial efficiency in five games since he was hurt in a faU. Thoren has averaged 20.5 points for the Illini in 10 games for seventh place in the scoring standings, barely a point per game more than lowa's leader, Dave Roach, who has a 19.3 mark for nine games. The fifth team unbeaten in Big Ten play, Michigan, a title favorite, was expected to have an easier test in its bid to retain a share of the conference lead, sheeting Purdue, a loser to Minnesota in its only league start. Both teams boast one of the league scoring leaders, in each case a sohomore. Purdue’s Dave Schellhase netted 29 points in his only game for a third place tie, while Michigan Cazzie Russell, rated one of the nation’s outstanding rookies, dropped 23 against Northwestern for sixth place. For the season Russell has averaged 22.7 in 11 games and Schellhase 19.6 in 10. Indiana, one of the two double losers in the league, faces the highest scoring team in the conference, Michigan State, on the Spartan floor while Wisconsin, also with an 0-2 conference mark, faces Northwestern on the Wildcat court. Michigan State, with more than 100 points in five games, and Northwestern each have a 1-1 conference record. Hockey Results National League New York 5, Boston 3. Detroit 5, Chicago 3. International League Chatham 1, Windson 1 (overtime tie).

Charles Finley Says Offers To K. C. Rejected CHICAGO (UPI) — Charles O. Finley said today his offer to keep his Athletics baseball team in Kansas City for a minimum of five years was rejected before he sought to move the franchise to LouisviUe. Finley, in hot water with the rest of the American League because he has signed a contract to play in Kentucky in 1964 and 1965, said he has made and had rejected three offers to keep his team in Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium. The first, he said, would have been for four years “with no escape clause,’’ the second for five years with “no escape clause,” and the third for two years. “The first two,” he said, “they didn’t regard as long term contracts.” Finley said that in the first two offers, the city would have had to rebate half his rent to apply . against S4II,<XX) which he spent to refurbish the stadium, but in the third, the $411,000 would have been absorbed by the Athletics. “They didn’t want to give me any options on the stadium,” he said. “And it turns out that the lease we’ve been playing under had an • escape clause in that the club could move at the end of any year it didn’t draw 850,000. “So we’ve been operating on a one-year contract, and they didn’t want to take my four or five year offers.” Finley’s application to move the club to Louisville will come before the American League at *' a special meeting called by President Joe Cronin on Jan. 16. Finley was confident he would get approval despite numerous opinions that the required seven of the 10 owners would not vote with him. Finley had the backing of LouisviUe Mayor William O. Cowger, Kentucky Gov. Edward T. Breathitt, Sen. Thruston B. Morton and other Kentucky officials. The mayor, governor and senator planned to attend next Thursday’s meeting to support Finley, Cowger said. Cowger wired Cronin Thursday that a large Kentucky delegation wou|d be On hand.
