Hi “A florist's Democrat Want Ad sold you some mistletoe — what’s it for?” Four Persons Slain At Church Rectory OTTAWA (UPD - Parishioners bowed their heads in prayer near the end of the noon Mass at the little church of Christ the King on the quiet last Sunday before Christmas. Then a loud knock on the door behind the altar heralded the beginning of a drama of horror that was to end witl? four persons fatally shot in the parish rectory a few yards away. Canadian Justice Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Lionel Chevrier, ■ a membey of the Roman Catholic parish, was among the 350 worshipers who saw and heard the events unfold. Two women and a man were shot to death • Sunday in an abortive robbery of the rectory in the heart of this Canadian capital city. Then one of two brothers, the suspected gunmen, killed himself in panic as police closed in The other brother surrendered and was charged with murder. Victims of the shooting were Miss Alberte Guindon, 45, the rectory housekeeper; Miss,- Doralise Bechard, who lived with a sister in an apartment in the rectory building, and Paul MerCier, a parishioner. Roger Binette, 21, shot himself in the head with an automatic pistol when police with machine guns closed in. His brother Reginald, 17, gave up when he crawled onto a third-story fire escape and found police guns bristling below. The younger Binette was charged rwith murder, punishable in / Canada with death by hanging. He was ordered to appear in police court at. 10 a.m. EST today to be formally charged.

Communist Guards Welcome Visitors BERLIN (UPD — Communist guards politely welcomed West Berlin Christmas visitors through the wall today but. apparently used their submarine guns on ap East German refugee ■to halt his flight West. West Berlin police reported hearing 10 bursts of submachine gun fire and screams during the fog-shrouded night at a point where the American sector touches East Germany. The incident marked the first border “blood incident” since the Communists four days ago temporarily opened ..the wall for yuletide East Berlin visits by West Berliners — the first such visits since the wall went up in August, 1961. West Berlin police said they heard cries of “halt, halt” mixing with the staccato gun blasts and the screams. They waited in the tog for a refugee to reach the Western side of the death strip. No one appeared. It happened a few hours before West Berliners, after a long wait, began moving through the wall crossing points. The East German guards smiled and said “welcome, welcome” and offered their arms to elderly women making their way through the snowy walkways. About 1.300 other West Berliners waited in cold and snow today for Christas day passes to visit East Berlin. All through the night they stood in line in 16 - degree weather outside pass-issuing offices waiting for the East German Communist officials to come. Between 35.000 and 40,000 West Berliners passed through into East Berlin in the first four days of the Communists’ crack in the wall which ends Jan. 5. Three Are Fined In Decatur City Court fines were paid in citycourt this morning with two local residents and a Bluffton man appearing in court. Robert J Hahn, ’37. of 928 Marshall Bt., paid a fine of $1 and costs totaling s2l, on a charge of public irttoxlcation. He was arrested by the city police Saturday evening. » ♦ Patrick packman, 216 N. Ninth St., was fined $1 and costs also, a total of $22.75, on a charge of reckless driving. He was arrested by the state police this past weekend. Charles D. West, Bluffton resident, was fined $lO and costs, a total of $31.75, on a speeding charge, and $1 on a charge of drlyjjig with a restricting license. There were no costs assessed on the license charge.
Gov. Scranton May Toss Hat In GOP Ring WASHINGTON (UPI) The Republican presidential outlook appeared more uncertain than ever today with the announcement that Pennsylvania Gov. William W. Scranton rtiav become an active candidate for the nomination. Scranton disclosed in Harrisburg, Pa., over the weekend that former President Dwight D. Eisenhower had urged him to run. The governor said he was giving the suggestion '‘deep thought” but was still disinclined to become an active candidate. Eisenhower recently suggested that Henry Cabot Lodge, U.S. ambassador to Viet Nam, also deserved consideration. And Richard M. Nixon, the 1960 Republican nominee, also has been a recent visitor >to the former President’s Gettysburg, Pa., office. GOP leaders believe that Eisenhower is cool toward Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz . although he has pledged himself to support whoever is nominated by the Republicans next year. Goldwater In Front Goldwater, who is not a declared candidate, is still far in front of the field in terms of potential delegate strength at the GOP convention. But Republican leaders have been quietly reappraising their prospects since the death of President Kennedy. Goldwater is judged to be a weaker candidate against President Johnson than he might have been against Kennedy. Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York is the only announced candidate. But few Republicans can regard him as a* likely winner of the nomination until and unless he defeats another major candidate in a state primary. Since Kennedy's assassination,’ Republicans have looked toward Nixon and Scranton as the strongest potential rivals of /Goldwater — Nixon as a man close to the center of the GOP and Scranton as a representative of the liberal faction. Needs Massive Buildup Scranton is viewed as a sort of “Republican Kennedy,” a youthful, handsome Ivy Leaguer a ' millionaire with charm and tested appeal in a big industrial state. But to make him a national figure, a massive buildup must start soon. The governor told newsmen that Eisenhower urged him Dec. 15 to consider becoming a candidate. “lie said the national scene now was such that he felt that a numberj of persons thought I should be the candidate and jjc thought that I ought to give a good deal of thought to this matter,” Scranton said. While sticking his toe in the water, the governor again denied that he is a candidate and sajd he knew of no national or state movement to launch a campaign for him.
