Q — Last year my regular employer took security tax out of my pay until my yearly earnings reached $4,800. I also worker part-time for another company and they withheld social security tax on $2,000 I earned with them. Since I paid the maximum tax in my regular job, was my part-time employer correct in also taking social security tax out of my pay? A.— Yes, each employer must withhold the social security tax on the first $4,800 paid you in the taxable year. However, you can claim the excess social security tax you paid as a against your income tax. Complete' information as to how this 1 credit is shown on your income tax return is in internal revenue instructions form 1040 for 1962. 2. Q — In 1961 I worked for several employers. Can I be sure all of them reported my earnings for social security purposes? A— Ask your social security office for form 7004. After completing and mailing the form you will receive a statement of earnings credited to your social security account. If the statement does not agree with you* records you should tell the people in your shocial security office so the error can be corrected as soon as possible. " 3. Q — A cleaning lady works ‘‘ in my home once a week. She D gets at least $5 a week, some- • times more when she does extra ‘ work. She told me I could report her for social security or ■ I could just forget it, she really didn't care. What should I do? A— You must report her cash wages for social security purposes. Under the law, if you employ someone to do household work in your home, the work is covered if within a calendar quarter you pay that person SSO or more in cash. Carfare , (if paid in cash) counts in determining if SSO was paid. 4. Q — My husband hires a young man to help us with the farm work each spring. Last year he paid this hired man $235. Our neighbor says we must report the hired man for social security', but my husband disagrees. Who is right? A— Your husband must report the cash wages of the hired man. Any farm employer who pays $l5O or more in cash wages to a farm employer in a year (or has a farmhand working for him on 20 or more days in a year for cash pay figured on a time basis) is a farm employer for social security purposes and is required to pay the taxes and make social security reports.. Your husband t should ask the internal revenue service office for necessary , report forms and instructions. 5. Q — I am a farm operator and had a poor year last year, netting only $750. Because my wife and I both get a S6OO deduction, no income tax is due. What about social security tax, do I owe any? A— A self-employed farm operator who has net earnings from farmingk of S4OO or more is reCLA.IMM ALLOWED RY THE ADAMS COUNTY COMMINNKJNEHM ON DECEMBER 10. HMI3 Kur»r>«r’» Drpt. quired to pay a self-employed tax.' 1 The social security tax is due (when the net is at least $400) whether or not income tax is due. You should file a tax return and pay the self-employment ► tax. 6 Q — I employ seven or eight people during the winter. Last winter one off the men did not have his social security card so I listed his name on the social security report without a number. Last week I got a letter from the social security administration in Baltimore asking for his social security number. I think I can get it but is it important. I only paid the man $65. A— It is important and you should make every effort to get the account number and report it to the social - security administration. This particular worker, for example, may need that quarter of social security coverage to qualify for benefits. Generally, a quarter of coverage is one in which a wage earner is paid SSO or moire. The $65 you paid, but which has not yet been credited to his account, could make quite a difference. If you cannot get the social security number, you should furnish his last known address.
