By Pete Reynolds r The Decatur Yellow Jack3ts, going out in front midway, through the first quarter and staying on top the jest of the way, chalked up their first victory of the season after six defeats Friday night, downing their arch rivals from Bluffton, 79-70, at the Decatur gym. The. defeat was the seventh in a row for the Tigers without a triumph. In addition to hitting the victory column for the first time, the Jackets also scored their first Northeastern Indiana conference win after two loop setbacks. The lead changed hands six times in the first four and onehalf minutes of the contest, with a three-point play by Sam Blythe giving Bill McColly’s boys an 119 lead, which they never lost the rest of the way. The Jackets had q. five-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 22-17. The Decatur lads built their bulge up to 10 pointy twice in the second stanza, at 40-30, and 42-32, but the Tigers came bouncing back and trimmed their deficit to only three points 43-40, at the main intermission. Bluffton could get no closer than three points in the third period, and at the end of the Bracket, the Yellow Jackets were on top by nine, 64-55. The visitors were held at bay throughout the last quarter, although coming within five points on two occasions, but the Jackets had the game well in hand through the last five minutes. Greg Ladd again topped the Decatur scoring with 31 points, 16 in the first half, and Sam Blythe followed with 22. also netting 16 in the first two periods. Max Elliott chipped in with 14 in the winning cause. Dave Terhune was leading poihtmaker for the Tigers with 30 points. Ted Mahnensmith contributed 16 and Joe Romine 14. There was plenty of free throw shooting, too with 27 fouls called on Bluffton and 20 on Decatur, each team losing one starter on personals. The Tigers had a H. S. Basketball New Haven 62, Angola 53. The Jackets will meet Portland in the second game Friday night, after Hartford City and Bluffton clash in the 7 p.m. opener. Geneva Loses To Hoagland Friday Night The Geneva Cardinals were handed their third straight loss Friday night, at the Hoagland Wildcats registered a 70-60 victory at the “Hoagland gym. Geneva narrowed the margin to two points, 29-27, at the half, but Hoagland pullldd in front at 52-45 at the end of the third period.
