Was Thomas Jefferson wrong? Jefferson felt that if men were given the opportunity to learn, to read, write, and think, and the leisure to develop their thoughts and opinions, that the vast majority would take advantage of the opportunity, and that a real } Democracy, with everyone taking part in the decisions, would be possible and probable. It takes no lengthy analysis to determine that this has not happened. The tools are present. Public education, at least through high school, is possible, and even mandatory to the sophomore year in most states. 1 - Books are readily available. If hard backs are too expensive, there are paper backs on every subject. The public libraries are open day and night, exchanges are possible with almost every library in the country. Newspaper of every hue and color, magazines of all types, are easily available at the newsstand, by subscription, or at the library. The radio and TV news and background programs, as well as cultural and spot news programs, are frequent. ~ Leisure time is so available that it has become a problem to use it rather than to get it. And what has happened? Are people any - „ wiser today? There is little indication of it. Oh, yes — more have graduated from high school — but fewer use the skills wisely. A generation or two ago the citizens were proud that they could read and understand, and they did take part in __ public meetings; today, the public is very lax, even when they suspect something wrong. Every American today could be another Thomas Jefferson — even greater — if he only utilized half of his leisure time. Few are so low in learning ability that they cannot compensate with effort, and be-' cdme really skilled in understanding public questions, goals of society, and other necessities of Democracy. But how many are doing it? We have been lulled to sleep by the very music of freedom, and live slaves to our lowest, rather than to our highest, ideals. We have replaced the reality of self-won freedom by the illusion of “freedom,” but are too lazy to free ourselves of the chain of ignorance that make us perpetually enslaved. Present Christmas Cantata Two Nights A Christmas cantata, “Night of Miracles,” will be given by the Decatur evangelical United Brethren Church on two occasions. The first presentation will be given Sunday at Trinity at T p.ro. The second presentation wil be at Bethany Christmas Eve at 11 p.m. “Night of Miracles" was written by John Peterson. Its message has its setting in the Christmas message from the gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke. The message reveals a night when centuries old prophecy came miraculously true; a night when shepherds were awe-stricken by a gloriously brilliant heavenly host that told of the birth of the Prince of Peace, a night when God sent His only begotten Son to be born of the virgin for the redemption of a world of sinners. This musical treatment re\eals this event as a night of miracles. The combined choir will be directed by Mrs. Lex Dormire and accompanied by organists Miss Kay Wynn and Mrs. Jerald Lobsiger. Soloists include Jeroldj Lobsiger, Mrs. Jan Elzey, Mrs. Norman Koons, Miss Eleanor Miller, Jan Elzey, Dan Miller and Reverend Penrod. Ted Hill was the narrator. The public is welcome to attend either or both of these cantatas. -•; i Chicago Produce CHICAGO (UPl)—Produce: Live poultry: Too few receipts to report prices. C SCROOGE'S SECRET Dear Mr. Santa Claus: Now, I know I’m the spirit of "Humbug” at the Christmas season—but, who wouldn’t have been a grouch, living a century age with no electricity? You have no idea how hard those flickering candles were on my old eyes. What with all the comfort and convenience electricity gives me today it’s hard to stay cantankerous. But, the thing that really warms the cockles of my heart is the low cost—even lower than forty years ago. Mind you, my bill is higher because I have so many appliances —but egad, what value I’m getting for every cent I spend ■ for electricity. It’s the cheapest thing I buy! Now I ask you: With all this comfort and convenience at such a low cost, how can I be expected to remain a grouch? Promise me you won’t tell a soul about my secret change of heart . . . and stop in Christmas Eve so I can join you in a chorus of "We Wish You a Merrie Christmas and a Happy New Year.” , Your Huknble Servant, Indiana e Michigan ■URcrmo company J , Am htStn UhMf •I ■ * 0 ~~ '
