Decatur Wrestlers Lose First Season Match To Muncie South Tuesday
A winning skein that began the 21st of November, came to an end Tuesday evening as the Decatur- high school wrestling team tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing a 31-9 decis.on to a rugged Muncie South squad. The loss was the first for the Decatur team after five consecutive wins, a streak which began with the opening night win over North Manchester, November 21. The loss doesn't take much luster from the local grapplers’ record, however, which now stands at 5-1. But the biggest factor was a powerful Muncie South squad. The Decaturites also dropped several close decisions. Myers Wins Gary Myers was the loije Decatur wrestler to post a victory in the match, as he came up with a 2-0 decision to keep his individual record unbeaten. Myers has now won five and fought to a draw at Noblesville. Dave Adams and Sam Baumann kept their records free of

Myers than got his dub on the! scoreboard with his two-point decision, getting the two points on a reversal in the second period, as he came up with a sterling performance. Adams Draws Adams then battled Patterson to a 7-7 draw in the 127 class. Adams took a 7-6 lead with an escape in the final period, but Patterson was awarded a point and the draw for having a minute more riding time. In the 133 division, Favors added five points to his team’s score as he pinned Lennie Corral of Decatur. It was the only pin of the night for the victors. Muncie boosted its lead to 19-5 as Terry won.a 7-3 decision over Neil Butcher of Decatur in the 138 weight, building up a 5-1 lead and hanging on for the win. Bishop Dwenger Wins Over Local Freshmen Bishop Dwenger, of Fort Wayne, edged the Decatur high school freshmen by a 34-31 score in a game played Tuesday evening in the local gym. The battle was a nip and tuck affair, with the lead see-sawing throughout the contest. Dave Spiegel led the Decatur scorers with eight tallies Rick Hullinger added seven, Tom Hower and Dave Anderson contributed six each and Bill Brown four. Schieder, with 13 points, and Shields, with 10, led the winners. Bishop Dwenger is the new Fort Wayne Catholic School which has just freshmen now. The team is coached by Rev. John Gillig, who is also the athletic director. Rev. Gillig is a Decatur native and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Gillig, 612 N. Second St. The freshmen A and B teams will both be in action Thursday at the local gym, playing Huntington. The first game is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. Monmouth Wins In Grade School Game Monmouth whipped Northwest —by a 44-20 score in a sth and *>th grade basketball game Tuesday. The winners built up a 25-12 halftime lead and went on to record the victory. Joumay’s 17 tallies paced Monmouth, and Curt Gerig’s six points were high for Northwest. Winners Are Listed In Lutheran League Bethlehem downed Preble and Friedheim bested Decatur Zion, in Lutheran League games this past weekend. Bethlehem was led by a sterling 32-point performance by G. Graft in its 42-32 win over Preble. J. Reinking topped Preble with 11 tallies. Friedheim beat Decatur by a 45-39 count, despite a 23-point spree by Thieme. L. Fuhrman topped the winners with 17 and D. Conrad added 10. Schnepf chipped in with 10 for the losers. Monmouth Frosh, Junior High Win The Monmouth freshmen and junior high were winners in a pair of games with Decatur Catholic’s frosh and St. Joe. The games were played in the Decatur Catholic gym Manday evening. The Monmouth junior high defeated St. Joe, 39-23, while the freshmen whipped Decatur by a 52-31 score. The freshman win was the third in five games for Monmouth, and the junior high victory was their second in five games. Draw Pairings For Four-Team Ossian Tourney Pairings were announced today for the four-team invitational tourney which will be held at the Ossian high school gym Friday and Saturday, January 10 and 11, in which the Adams Central Flying Jets and the Monmouth Eagles* will compete. The opening game, at 7 p. m. Jan. 10, will pit the Lancaster Central Bobcats against the Ossian Bears, followed at 8:15 by Adams Central and Monmouth. The Friday night losers will meet in the consolation game at 7 p. m. Jan. 11, followed by the championship encounter between the Friday night winners. Season tickets, good for both nights, will be priced at $1.50, while single session tickets will - be sl. Season tickets will go on sale at each school, with the Monmouth sale opening Monday, Jan. 6. - Officials for the Friday night session will be Roy Kilby and Gary Janeway, and the Saturday night officials will be Everett Campbell and Dave Habegger. Second Team Tourney Plans were also announced today for a four-team invitational second team tourney, to be played Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 6 and 7. Competing reserve teams will „bfe from Adams Central, Monmouth, Berne and Geneva. 'The drawing for this tourney will be held shortly before the opening session. The opening games will be played at the Monmouth gym at 6:30 and 7:30 p. m. Jan. 6. First night losers will meet in the consolation game at 6:30 p. m. Jan. 7 at the Adams Central gym, followed by the championship tilt. Admission for each session will be 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.
