■ Youth Arraigned On Two Charges A 19-year-old was arraigned in the Adams Circuit court this morning on two charges. David Lee Beery, 19, of 510 Grant St., was arraigned on charges of rape, and assault and battery with intent to commit a felony. Jadge Myles F. Parrish explained Beery’s rights to him this morning, and gave him further time to confer "with his attorney, John L. DeVoss, before entering a plea to the charges. The youth was taken into custody by the city police and sheriff’s officers shortly before noon Saturday, after an affidavit against him had been signed by Mrs. Roger Bixler, 17, of 417 S. First St. After the affidavit was signed early Saturday morning, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Early Sat. Morning The alleged assault occurred about 3:30 a.m. Saturday as Mr. and Mrs. Bixler were asleep. Beery allegedly entered their home and assaulted the 17-year-old Mrs. Bixler. She stated she had screamed, waking her husband, and then her assailant fled from the home, jumped into his car and drove away. The police were notified moments later, and began an investigation which took most of the morning. Released on Bond Beery was taken into custody at his home and taken to jail and held under $5,000 bond. His parents later posted a SIO,OOO surety bond, and he was released. Surety bonds must be twice the amount of the actual bond under which a person is being held. He appeared in court at 9 o’clock this morning, at which time Judge Parrish advised him of his rights under the law, and then allowed the youth further time before entering a plea. Former Decatur Man Taken Into Custody James Douglas Brown, former resident of this city, is being held in the Adams county jail, awaiting arraignment on a fraudulent check charge. Brown was picked up by deputy sheriff Harold August on a detain- ' er warrant at the penal farm Saturday, after being released. He had served 90 days on a fraudul- " ent check charge from another county. He is in custody in the local jail, and was expected to be arraigned in the Adams circuit court this afternoon. The Rubber Plant • If a rubber plant starts to turn brown and loses its leaves, it may be caused by insects in the soil—but the bugs are often caused by giving the plant too much water. To get rid of both causes, remove half the sdil from the tub or pot, replace with fresh soil, and don’t water the plant at all for a week. After that, water it very sparingly.
