Our Local Bank - When the Indiana board of financial institutions voted Tuesday to allow Indiana state banks to raise ■iheir interest rates, the First State Bank of Decatur was ready with a reply through its executive vice-presi-dent, Herman H. Krueckeberg. Decatur citizens were quite pleased to learn *• that they would probably be getting 3’/2% on their ' bank savings in regular passbook accounts after the first of the year, as soon as the bank board meets. The Decatur bank is frequently criticised by people as being “too conservative” in coffee-house conversations, but it is very encouraging to see that it was one of the few banks ready with a statement on this very important question when it came up. How did other banks in other cities around here react? In Portland one bank said no statement could be made until the bank board met; the other said that they were “studying the matter.” In Hartford City a spokesman said a final decision had not been made; in Montpelier the bank would delay action until the 14th of January. No comment was even made on the state story in the Berne or Bluffton newspapers. At Coumbia City the two banks said that rate hikes would be up to the board of directors. In Huntington one bank bravely Said it would raise the interest, but the other bank, and the banks at Warren, Bippus, and Roanoke said that the matter would be presented to the boards of directors for a decision. Bank officials in Winchester and Union- City were not prepared to comment, / When the reassuring comment by a responsible officer of the First State Bank is compared with the evasive, conservative statements of many other area bankers, it stands out as a shining light. Decatur has little to fear as long as it stands assured of being able to get prompt, decisive action from its local bank. This is the same kind of action that brought the bank through the depression, and the kind that indicates that our money is well protected in its care. Editorial written byDick Heller
