Indiana and Purdue If university size is a criterion of greatness, Indiana and Purdue universities are certainly doing very well, ranking 10th and 15th respectively in size in the nation. This fall’s freshman class represented an increase of 3.8%' over last year, and the next two years are expected to be much larger. _ The University of California is the largest U.S. university, with 62,240 students; State University of New York is second, with 52,893, and City University of New York is third with 40,580. The University of Minnesota is the largest Big Ten school, with 35,112, ranking fourth largest in the nation. Wisconsin, Ohio State, Illinois Michigan State, and Texas are next, with I. U. ranking tenth, with 23,679 full-time students. In 20 years, the number of students has doubled. Purdue is 15th in size, with 16,584 students. It is interesting to note that the two Indiana state universities have more than kept up with the national average in growthr It is quite important to our state that we have fine universities, so that the sum total of knowledge and learning techniques can be perpetuated, and our business and cultural leaders make the most of what is available- in the fields of knowledge and skill. It is equally important, though, that the state universities not be allowed to monopolize education. Education, to be truly “free” in the sense of universal, must be unhampered by an over-all bureaucracy that limits learning. Independent colleges and universities, independent libraries, museums, and institutions are all invaluable. The independence of our primary and secondary schools from the advanced universities is also valuable. ■ . ’ ■ ■■ ■ * r The. question of advanced education freely available to all, through some medium between high school and university is only now being openly discussed in . Indiana._ It would seem to the editor that it would be an advantage to have Indiana grow through a system of junior colleges attached to local groups of school boards, perhaps on a county basis, rather than through extensions of large universities. The reasoning here is complex, but not least among the considerations is that of cost: smaller, jun- 1 ior colleges, more closely aware of the transitional needs from the particular secondary schools of/their district to higher education, would be less expensive than university extensions, which would be including a number of overhead costs, such as travel and transfer of university campus professors to centers, in the cost of enrollment.
