Five contests are carded Friday night and three Saturday. , — 000 — The Decatur Yellow Jackets, witdess in four starts, have the toughest assignment, opening their Northeastern Indiana conference schedule with a pair of road games, playing at Columbia City Friday night and at Fort Wayne Concordia Saturday night. — 000 — The Decatur Commodores with a 2-3 record, will meet on alumni quintet Friday night at the Decatur gym in the Commodores’ only game of the week. In Friday’s, other encounters, the unbeaten Central, Roanoke will be at Monmouth, and Berne and Geneva will clash at Berne. s — 000 — In addition to 'the Jackets’ game at Concordia, Saturday will also find Adams Central playing at Woodlan, and Monmouth hosting Eastside, formerly Butler. — 000 — Feature of last week’s firing was Monmouth’s victory over the Elmhurst Trojans Saturday. The Trojans, boasting one of the biggest teams in the area, had lost only to Huntington before the Eagles knocked them over Saturday. To Madison In Overtime ———— « Failure to cash in on free throws cost the Geneva Cardinals their first defeat pf the season Saturday night, with the Madison township club of Jay county racking up a 54-49 victory in an overtime battle. The Jay county quintet piled up a 14-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Cardinals came back to take a 23-21 advantage at the half. Geneva increased its lead to 3326 after three periods, but Madison came back to knot the score at 47-47 at the expiration of the regular playing time. The visitors collected seven points in the overtime session to only two for the Cardinals. Jerry Alberson, of Geneva, led all scorers with 18 points. Ron Bollenbacher added 14 and Mike Newcomer 11 for the Cardinals; who converted only 13 of 31 free throw chances. Kunkle topped Madison with 16 points and Denny Van Osdol counted 14. Draw Is Announced For Portland Meet The Decatur Yellow Jackets will meet Portland in the second game of the annual holiday tourney, it was announced this morning by athletic director Bob, Worthmap, following a recent draw. Hertford City will meet Bluffton BLthe first game of the * opening foßfed, with Decatur and Portland to tangle in the second contest. The tournament will be playedFriday and Saturday, December 27 and 28 in the Portland high school bymijasium. The Hartford City-Bluffton game will begin at 7 p.m., with the Decatur-Port-land contest to follow. The Friday evening winners will battle for the championship in the second game Saturday, with the losers to meet in a consolation battle at 7 p.m. in the first game. Eagles Down Elmhurst By I 52-48 Score j The Monmouth Eagles registered their fourth consecutive victory i Saturday night as they surprised j the favored Elmhurst Trojans, 5248, at the Elmhurst gym . ' I The win gave the Eagles a 4-2 season record, and for Elmhurst it was the second loss in five starts. "f i Saturday’s battle was close all the way. The teams were tied at 9-9 at the first quarter and the Trojans held a §cant two-point advantage, 24-22, at the half. The Eagles overcame a five-point deficit midway in the third period and the quintets were again knotted, 34-34 at the end of the quarter. Elmhurst was in front, 40-36, halfway through the final stanza but the Eagles scored six straight points to take the lead and stayed in front the rest of the way. Bob Brandt, veteran Monmouth guard, was the game’s top scorer with 17 points, the only Eagle, in double figures. Tom Mullans scored 10 to 1e a d Elmhurst. T.h e Eagles cashed 20 of 23 attempts from the free throw line, the trojans 14 of 23. Decatur Wrestlers Win Fourth In Row, Defeat ! . ' ■■■&...' ' ' ' •' ' - Howe Military Saturday
The Decatur high school wrestlers remained unbeaten Saturday, as they posted their fourth win without a loss by a convincing 426 score over Howe Military. Ten of the 12 Decatur starters were winners in the Saturday afternoon match, with six pinning their opposition for victories. In addition, six of the local grapplers, Alan Kalver, Gary Myers;" Dave Adams, Sam Baumann, Deane Lehman and Steve Hazel"wood, kept their individual unbeaten strings going. Hazelwood posted his fourth win with an easy 10-0 decision over Fox of the visitors, getting six points for a pair of near-pins. Lehman struck quickly against his foe, Gower, in a bruising battle, and pinned him with two seconds remaining in the first period. It was the second quickest pin of the day. * Quickest Pin Myers, who has three wins and a draw, got the quickest pin, needing just a minute and 30 secons of the first period to pin Saunders of Howe. All three of his wins have come by pinning his opponents. Baumann matched Lehman's time, as he pinned Heinisch with just two seconds left in the initial period. It was his fourth win, three by pins, .this season. Adams needed just 20 seconds of the second stanza to pin Marcus of the visitors, getting three points for a near fall in the first period. Kalver_ran into a tough foe, Henderson of Howe, but got two points for a takedown in the first period and two for a reversal in the third period, to chalk up a 4-0 decision. It was also his fourth win without a loss. Decatur jumped into a big lead tn a hurry in the match, as their St. Joe Is Winner Over Wabash Team The St. Joseph Pirates rallied in the second half to post a 49-38 win over St. Bernard of Wabash at the later’s gym Sunday afternoon. The St. Joe quintet trailed, 7-2, at the frist period break and 22-19 at halftime, but rallied to tie the score after three periods, and then outscored their opponents 17-6, in the final quarter for the victory. Rick Caciano paced the winner# With 18 tallies' and'Pat Baker added 12. Gormay paced St. Bernard with 11 and Buckley chipped in with 10. ST. Reinking Easy Winner Larry Reinking gave a tremendous effort in the 180 weight, as he got a big total of 15 points for a 15-1 decision. Reinking got four near-pins. It was his third win of the year against a loss by a one-point decision. Howe got their six points with decisions in the 138 and 154 pound weights. Trailing by a 26-0 score, Daugherty got his team on the scoreboard with a 11-3 decision over Neil Butcher in the 138 class, a;; he jumped into a big 7-0 point lead with a takedown, reversal and near-fall.
