COMMODORES ; By Bob Shraluka The Monmouth Eagles chalked up their third win in a row Friday night with a 56-52 win over the Decatur Catholic Commodores, in a real “barn-burner” in the Eag'e gym. * « The battle was expected to be a good one, and a good one it was, as the contest wasn’t definitely decided until three seconds remained as, Danny Conrad dropped in a pair of free thorws for the final four-point margin; It was a nip and tuck battle all the way, with first one team* spurting into the lead and then the other. The Commodores held their last lead with 2; 13 showing on the scoreboard when Dan Lose’s long one-hander gave them a 51-50 advantage. Monmouth' had held its biggest lead, 50-43, just a minute and a half before, but Ed Kohne pumped in three fielders within a minute span and Lose’s basket put his club into ' the lead. Pressure Free Throws Hie Commodores got possession of the ball with 1:16 left, still holding the slim lead. Monmouth stole the ball, gave it back on a violation, and then stole another pass and with 28 seconds remaining, Conrad was fouled and hit both ends of a one and one for a 52-51 Eagle lead. A Commodore shot went astray, and Dean Schieferstein was fouled with 13 seconds to play. The veteran hit a pair of pressurepacked free throws for a threepoint lead. With seven seconds left in the game, Dan Lose was awarded a one and one. He sank the first shot and deliberately missed the second, but Jerry Liby grabbed the rebound and flipped to Conrad, who was fouled, and he wrapped up the affair. See-Saw Game Monmouth led throughout the initial period, but a rebound effort by Kohne and a driving layup by John Lose gave the Decatur five a 15-14 lead at the period’s end. The lead see-sawed throughout the second period, and Mike Luginbill’s one-hander at the gun gave his club a 28-26 lead at the main break. The Eagles spurted into the lead starting the third eight min-, utes, but the Commodore’s pulled a spurt of their own to tie matters again, and Bob-Brandt’s sensational half-court heave at the gun gave the Eagles a 42-40 margin entering the final, frantic eight minutes. Schiefei;stein’s 17 tallies topped all scorers and Conrad added 12 for the winners. Kohne and Dan Lose were high for Decatur with 14 apiece and sophomore John Lose chipped in with 10. Eighteen personals were whistled on Monmouth, 17 on Decatur Catholic. The Eagles hit 18 of 27 charity tosses and the Commodores orly 14 of 28, as both clubs connected on 19 field shots. The Eagles, now owning a 3-2 mark, swing back into action tonight when they travel to Fort Wayne to meet a talented Elmhurst Trojan five.
