Decatur Wrestlers Whip New Haven Bulldogs Last Night By 25 To 17 Score

The Decatur high school wrestling team made 'it three straight Thursday evening, blasting a fine New Haven club with some potent wrestling good for a 25-17 win before another big crowd at the local gym. The victory kept coach Gary Giessler’s squad’s record unmarred, as they now own three wins in three tries. The rugged Decatur grapplers will go for number four in a row Saturday afternoon, when they play host to Howe Military at 2 p.m. in the local gym. The Thursday win over ,New Haven was a sweet one for the Decatur team, as they had lost four times in their first two seasons to New Haven. This was the first time a Decatur team beat a New Haven team in any athletic event .in quite some time. It was evident as they entered the gymnasium that Giessler’s grapplers were primed for a supreme effort, and they jumped into a quick lead and never trailed, beating several New Haven challenges. Seven Poet Wins Posting wins were Alan Kalver, Tom Eyanson, Gary Myers, Dave Adams, Sam Baumann, Deane Lehman and Steve Hazelwood, with Myers the only one to register a pin. All but Eyanson are unbeaten yet this year. New Haven gave Decatur five

points immediately, a* they failed to produce a 95-younder and Tommie Eyanson of Decatur was a winner without even doffing his sweatshirt. The visitors got three of those points back in the 103 class when Hetrick piled up 15 points to decision Arthur Ybarra, who showed lack of experience but plenty of courage in his first varsity start. Alan Kalver, the clever Decatur veteran, chalked up his third victory of the season when he outpointed Stahl, 8-2. Kalver picked Up two points with a takedown, but Stahl got two with a reversal, before Kalver went to work and began piling up points for the decision. Myers Pins Foe Junior Gary Myers then boasted Decatur’s lead to a comfortable 13-3, as he bounced onto the mat, got two points for a takedown, and then pinned Lewis with 29 seconds left in the first period. Myers completely con-’ trolled the match for the minute and 31 seconds it took trim to pin his foe in the 120 class. Dave Adams, another junior veteran, tacked three more points Army, Navy To Baffle Before 100,000 Fans PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — In any rivalry like Army-Navy, the intangibles often play strange tricks and this is exactly what Paul Dietzel will be hoping for Saturday in Philadelphia Stadium. His psychological warfare campaign against Wayne Hardin and Navy has been a masterpiece, but whether it can change the expected outcome is the question some 100,000 fans will be awaiting at kickoff time. The Middies have been installed as 11-point favorites and many of the experts are calling the current squad one of the best in the Naval Academy’s history. Navy has an 8-1 record and All-America quarterback, Roger Staubach. Which all leads back to the psychological warfare. Hardin, the Middie coach, is proud of his team’s accomplishments and is not afraid to say so publicly, "nie trouble is, Dietzel has away of getting these comments to his team. His favorite quote is one he found after last year’s ArmyNavy game. He has kept it on his desk since then. It reads: “The turning point of the game came when we showed up.” "That quote,” Dietzel said with a wry smile, “was attributed to Wayne Hardin.” Dietzel then reached into his pocket and began reading other clippings, just as strong. "These boys can read,” he said, "they know what has been said about them by the Navy people.” Despite the psychology, Dietzel realizes it will take a maximum effort to beat the Midshipmen. “We have a lot of respect for the Navy team,” he said, but this is a great challenge. I never went into a game I expected to lose. If you expect to lose you usually do.”

onto the lead as he decisioned Keeler, 6-0. Adams, who had a 13-2 record last year, wore down his opponent, gaining four points in the final period when conditioning tells the tale. Voigt of New Haven, an unbeaten sectional champion last season, got his team back to within 16-8 when he pinned Lennie Corral with just four seconds left in the second period, after Correl had given him a good workout. Reiling of the visitors cut the Decatur lead to 16-11, when he decisioned Neil Butcher, 6-1, but the New Haven club could never get any closer. Baumann Wins » In a real “grudge” match, Sammy Baumann outpointed Downey, 4-2, boosting his team’s lead to 19-11. Two of the best wrestlers in the area, the two 145 pound-, ers have been waging war on each other for two seasons, and last night Baumann showed his superiority, gaining two. points for a takedown and two for a reversal. Osdale, another rugged New Haven veteran, had his hands full with Tim Magley in the 154 class, but finally posted an 1-5 decision, cutting the Decatur lead to five points, 19-14. Deane Lehman then moved his club nearer to victory with a 4-2 decision over Bade of the visitors in the 165 weight, in a real “rock and sock” match. It was his third win. Larry Reinking of Decatur lost his first match of the year, as he was nosed out by Fox, one of New Haven’s best, in a 4-3 decision. Trailing 4-2 in points, Reinking escaped from a hold for a point and spent most of the last period trying to catch Fox, who kept backpedaling in an effort to hold on for the win. » Big Steve Hazelwood, the alleverything in football, then put the frosting on the victory cake and set the final margin at 25-17, as he outpointed Mosel, 3-1. The huge crowd was clamoring for a pin, but Hazelwood was unable to catch the backpedaling Mosel, who was warned once and penalized once for stalling. Detroit Lions Bogey-Men Os National Loop By United Press International The Detroit Lions, until recently the biggest disappointments of the National Football League season, suddenly have become the bogey-men of both conference races. The Lions, who complicated matters in their own Western Division by playing a Thanksgiving Day tie with the Green Bay Packers, could make things rough for the Cleveland Browns in the Eastern Division Sunday at Detroit. And *on the final Sunday of the regular season, the Lions have a date with the Chicago Bears. The Bears actually could clinch the Western title this weekend, but they would need help from the Los Angeles Rams. Los Angeles, which has won five of its last seven games, takes on Green Bay Saturday afternoon in a nationally televised game from the West Coast. Should the Rams upset the Packers, the ,Bearsj»could win. •'•■the- Western title by beating the San Francisco Forty Niners in Chicago on Sunday. Chicago leads the division with a record of nine victories, one defeat and two ties; Green Bay has nine wins, two losses and one tit. In the Eastern Division, where the New York Giants are at home against the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Cardinals entertain the Philadelphia Eagles, the race cohld have one. two s or three leaders by sundown. New York and Cleveland are tied .with 9-3 records; St. Louis is close behind with 8-4. A Giants’ victory coupled with a Cleveland defeat at Detroit would assure New York of at least a tie for first place at the close of the regular season. However, setbacks by the Giants and Browns coupled with a Cardinals’ victory would put all three clubs back into a tie. . In Sunday’s two other games, the Dallas Cowboys (3-9> are at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers <6-3-3) and the Baltimore Colts <6-6 > play at home against the Minnesota Vikings (4-7-1). The “line” on the weekend games: Green Bay 10 over Los Angeles: Chicago 17 over San Francisco; Cleveland 4 over Detroit; New York 15 over Washington; St. Louis 10 over Phil--adclphia; Pittsburgh 3 over and Baltimore 7% over Minnesota.
