Giants, Braves Make Player Deal Tuesday SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UPI) The Milwaukee Braves, jubilant upon obtaining star outfielder Felipe Alou from the San Francisco Giants in a fantastic bidding contest, figured today they were in a prime position to! win the 1964 National League pennant. - “The trade made us more solid and more diversified than ever before,” said Braves Manager Bobby Bragan. “I think we are in the best position to j challenge the leaders in several 1 years.” t( But the Giants claimed the trade should put them on even terms with the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The swap sent Alou, veteran catcher Ed Bailey, pitcher Billy Hoeft and a player still to be named, the the Braves for pitchers Bob Hendley and Bob Shaw, and veteran backstop Del Crandall. Gave Good Man “If we had had Shaw with us last year we would have fought the Dodgers for the pennant right down to the closing day,” said Manager Alvin Dark of the Giants. “But we gave up a good man in Alou. Every chib in the majors was bidding for him.” The key men involved were Alou, Hendley and Shaw. The Braves have been looking for a capable center fielder for years. And the Giants lost out in the pennant race last year for lack of capable pitching. “Felipe will play center field for us, with Lee Maye in left and Hank Aaron in right,” said Bragan. “And don’t forget we can play Eddie Mathews in left, too. But the trade gives us a wealth of right - handed hitting power.” Alou, who hit .316 for* the GL. ants in 1962 when they won the pennant, slumped to .281 last year, but still rapped 20 home runs and drove in 83 runs. Used In Belief Shaw, 30, will be used in relief by the Giants. He had a 7-11 record for the Braves last year. But had a tight 2.66 earned run average and 104 strikeouts. Hendley,. 24, will be giyen > shot as a starter. He was 9-9 last year with a 3.94 ERA, and 105 strikeouts. "We figure we’ll have five starters on our pitching staff now,” said Dark. “They will be Juan Marichal, Jack Sanford, Bob Bolin, Billy O’Dell and Handley.” Dark said he would use rookie Jesus Alou, Felipe’s 21-year-old younger brother, in right field.—. “He’ll hit around .275,” said Dark. “Hut if he has trouble, we still have Harvey Keunn available for that position.’’ QUALITY PHOTO FINISHING All Work Left on Thursday Ready the Next Day, Friday, Before Noon HOLTHOUSE DRUG CO.

New Haven Grapplers Here Thursday Night The Decatur high school wrestling team will put its unbeaten record on the line Thursday evening against a rugged foe, New Haven. The local grapplers have posted victories in their first two starts this year, in convincing fashion over North Manchester and Noblesville, but New Haven will prove the most formidable foe of the three. A large crowd is expected for the match* which will start at 7 o’clock Thursday night in the Decatur gym. Admission is 10 cents for students and 25 cents for [adults.. * I The match will be the first of two in three days for coach Gary Giessler’s crew. Saturday afternoon, Decatur will entertain Howe Military’s squad in the gymnasium here, in a match slated to start at 2 p.m. But the big test will be Thursday night, as New Haven will bring a veteran team to Decatur. The Bulldog grapplers, coached by Al Thomas, a teammate of Giessler’s on the Ball State wrestling team a few years ago, had only two seniors on their starting 12 last season. Decatur Yellow Jackets Bow To Berne Bears For Third Consecutive Loss

By Pete Reynolds The Berne Bears scored their first victory of the season and the Decatur Yellow Jackets absorbed, their third consecutive lose without a win as the Bears racked'up a 54-41 triumph on the Decatur court Tuesday night. It was probably the poorest exhibition of basketball these two ’old rivals have displayed.against each other in many years, but the brand of balhdidn’t slow down the enthusiasm of the fans in the packed gym. The first quarter was a nip and tuck affair. Berne took an early 4-1 lead on field goals by Dave Fox and Bob Patterson, but twopointers by Kenny Rifjfle and Craig McEwan put the Jackets on top, 5-4, after nearly five finutes had elapsed. The Decatur lads upped their lead to 8-4, but Berne cut its deficit to a single point, 10-9, at the end of the firnt quarter. The Jackets lost an opportunity to pad that lead when they hit only four of eight free throw chances in the period. Decatur was still on top by a - point, 16-15, with 4:29 to go, but the Bears scored the next eight points and went into the dressing
