Decatur Yellow Jackets Lose Home Opener Friday To Muncie South, 77-65

By Pete Reynolds Muncie Southside’s Rebels, us'ing their height advantage to telling effect, handed the Decatur Yellow Jackets their second setback in as many starts on the season Friday night at the Decatur gym by a 77-65 score. . The jackets managed to stay close to the Rebels for the first three minutes of the game, in fact, the Jackets scored first to take an , &rly 4-0 lead in the first minute. Max Elliott, fouled after only 12 seconds of play, dropped in a pair of free throws and Sam Blythe hit the first of hiS five bucCardinals And Browns Tangle In NFL Feature By GARY KALE DPI Sports Writer Charley Johnson of the St. Louis Cardinals is a quarterback who likes to chew his cabbage twice. Johnson, having the best year Os a brief career, beat Cleveland. 2Q-14, two weeks ago and now must duplicate the feat to keep the Cards at the top of the National Football League’s Eastern Division. The 24-year-old chemical engineer survived the earlier Browns’ clash because of his ability to keep passes out of defenders’ hands. Only two tosses were intercepted by Cleveland. Johnson was better against the New York Giants last Sunday when .he had no interceptions as the Cards won, 24-17, to throw the conference into a three-way tie for the lead. St. Louis. Cleveland and New York have 8-3 records. The crowded first-place slot should ease, especially since ■ thte Giants have a “breather” at Dallas (3-8). Can Pad Lead The Chicago Bears (9-1-1) ’can improve their lead in the Western Division against the visiting Minnesota Vikings (4-7). Green? Bay’s Thanksgiving Day tie witp Detroit enabled the Bears to j/tain a lead over the Packers, who now are 9-2-1. In Sunday’s other action, the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3-2), still with an outsjde chance at the Eastern title, host the Philadelphia Eagles (2-8-1 >: . the San Francisco Forty Niners (2-9) are home to the Los Angeles Rams (4-7) and the Baltimore Colts (5-6) play the Redskins (38) at Washington. Cleveland depends on its NFL workhorse, Jimmy Brown, for maintaining its first place grip in, the standings. Brown has an incentive to carry him through. He needs only 30 more yards to break his own league rushing record of 1,527- yards set in 1958 The 232-pound Cleveland .bulldozer blasted Cardinal de- , fbnses for' 154 yards in their last meeting. | Giapte Earlier Victors The Giants defeated Dallas in New York earlier this season after trailing at halftime. Y. A. ' Tittle threw four -touchdowns in the game that helped sef the! stage- for a potential recordbreaker Sunday. ! Chicago has won four straight from Minnesota and must win to forestall any Green Bay upsurge. The Bears go against the Vikings minus fullback Rick Casares, who is out with an ankle injury. - St. Louis and Chicago are favored by the schedule as each plays its last three games at home. The Cards, in addition to the Browns, host Philadelphia and Dallas. Chicago, after the Vikings, meets visiting San. Francisco and Detroit. Cleveland finishes its schedule on the road at Detroit and Washington and Pittsburgh after the Giants' Dallas trip, and Green Bay winds up its slate at Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Muncie lads then began to pull away and at the end of the first quarter the Rebels were in front by nine points, 23-14. Muncie increased its margin to 18 points at the half-time break. 49-31, York showing the way with nine markers in the period. » The Jackets came back with the start of the second half with their best ball of the night, dropping in 18 points to only 12 for the visitors. leaving Southside with a 6149 bulge going into the final eight minutes. The team payed on even terms in the last quarter, each scoring 16 points. ■ Greg Ladd, only returning regular for the Jackets, was the game’s ‘ outstanding scorer with 24 points. Hfiwever, Sam Blythe was the only other Jacket to give Ladd much scoring help, dropping 'in 15. Muncie had wellbalanced scoring, York and Scott Cooper each scoring 16 points. Cook 14 and Mike Stewart 12.
