DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT Published Every Evening Except Sunday by THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO., INC. Entered at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller, Jr. President John G. Heller Vice President Chas. E. Holthouse Secretary-Treasurer » - ■ - A Brighter Place If you haven’t seen Decatur’s Christmas lights on as yet, drive uptown this evening — they’re worth a special trip. The old city really looks like something with the new lights on. The new light poles on 13th street have also been decorated — the problem previously was that there were no poles up out there to decorate. The Christmas lighting project was the result of a lot of hard work by Ferris Bower, project chairman, and George Litchfield, advertising chairman, who put over the horse show this fall, and made Decatur the recognized center in horse-shoe-ing that it used to be when horse trading was the big thing in Indiana. And of course “ much of the credit has to go to Mrs. Kaye Boch, of the Kiddie Shop, who heads the Decatur Retail Association this year, and who has sparked mu<?h of the enthusiasm which has made De- * catur’s business grow and grow this past year. Decatur’s stores offer great variety this year, with low overhead. When you’re downtown shopping, why«not stop in, and buy your Christmas gifts early — you’ll never get better bargains than from your Decatur merchants who pay Adams - county, North Adams, Washington » Root township, and Decatur taxes every year, and make possible the fine public buildings and government which we have. The bright Decatur lights, coming as they did after a sad Thanksgiving marred by the President’s assassination, seemed to brighten this whole area, and added a little special something that we lacked before. Take a look at them this evening — you’ll be glad you did! Editorial written by | Dick Heller TV PROGRAMS Central Daylight Time

I UH II » fll in,. nt A MIND OF ITS OWN — Mrs. H. A. Colchin poses with her large Jadeplant, which sat for 25 years in the Colchin residence and never bloomed. Removed from the house and relegated to a place on the Colchin back porch the plant evidently decided to get down to business and produced blooms within a few weeks. —— l — (Photo' by Mac Lean) Twenty-five years ago Mrs. H. A. Colchin, 258 N, Second street, •purchased a Jadeplant, a member of the Crassula plant family native to South Africa, and for 25 years she futilely waited for it to bloom. The plant, in a half-obliging way, grew and grew and grew from a three-inch shoot to a double-trunked three-foot tree—but not one bud or bloom did it produce. , Last month Mrs. Colchin, evidently deciding that there are limits to _gven that kind of patience, put the unproductive shrub on her back porch to be hauled away. The Colchins left for their vacation and did not return until ' ' early November. Arriving home they found that the house-bred bush had not only thrived in the hot, dry outdoor weather but had actually burst'into bloom. z The 25-year-old plant was carted tenderly off the back porch and placed in the window of the Colchin"s liquor store where it is still sitting— blooming.

Expense Statements Filed Al Bluffton Expense statements filed Tuesday by the treasurers of Bluffton’s two political parties have failed to indicate the sources of contributions, as required by law. The Indiana corrupt practices act binds parties to list their contributors when filing statements of receipts and 7 expenses for elec-' tion campaigns. The Democrats statement, filed by central committee treasurer William Reiff, listed contributions received by the party from Oct. 14 to Nov. 22 ’ separately, giving the date of each, but neglected to specify the persons from whom the amounts were received. The Republican statement, filed by treasurer T. Wayne Kehoe, gave only a total figure for all contributions received from Sept. 10 to November 25, also omitting names. The Republican statement also failed to specify, in a number of instances, individuals and firms which received money during the campaign for such services as photographhs and signs, rent and poll watchers. Wells county clerk Hester Karnes was told Wednesday that an "amendment” to the Republican statement would be filed later. The Democratic statement lists a balance of SIOO in party funds September 1 and a balance of sl,508.42 November 26, after the election. Receipts during the period, all from contributions, amounted to $2,990.25 and expenses were $1,481.83, according to the statement. Republicans listed a flat zero balance in funds Sept. 10 and a balance of $306.20 November 25. Receipts, totaling $1,985.20, included $1,782.50 in contributions, $85.05 in "proceeds of sale of tickets to district meeting” and $117.65 ‘in “services contributed.” _____ __ J.
