Earning Capacity Increase Revealed

NEW YORK — To what extent has Adams county’s economy moved ahead since the last war? How much better off are local residents than they were 15 years ago? The rate at which they have advanced, as well as their prospects for the future, are matters of basic importance to the county's residents. . .. Just as expansion and growth are counted on .year after year. to keep the national econom'y on an even keel and to provide jobs for the growing labor force, so it is at the local level. And, to each community, what is happening in its own back yard is of much greater concern than

what is happening elsewhere in the country. Studies completed by the U. S. department of commerce, by sales management and by other agencies reveal, for each area of the United States, what progress it has made in the last 15 years. Meaningful Rise Here In Adams county, the figures show, a significant rise in earning capacity has taken place Since 1947. The average income per family at that time, after taxes, amounted to $3,111 a year. " As of last year, the local average had climbed to $6,131 per family. Some of that improvement was of no actual value, however, be-

cause the cost of living had gone up at the same time. The 1962 dollar would not buy as much as the 1947 one did. How much of it had to be discounted? In terms of buying power, only three-fifths of the increase was real, the department of commerce estimates. Up 58% In Adams county, consequently, the real rise in family income over the 15-year period amounted to 58 per cent. The advance, which was greater than that recorded in many sections of the country, made for a higher standard of living than before. The comparable rise in the United States was 35 per cent and, in the east north central states, 33 per cent. The average growth rate throughout the country during lhe 15 years, on the basis of family income, was $l2O a year. Since the $l2O represents cash income only, farm families did not show to as good advantage as

did urban families because some of their returns were in the form of rent-free housing and in goods produced and consumed on the farm. PRES. JOHNSON (Continued from Page One) left “The time has come for Americans of all races and creeds and political beliefs to understand and respect one another,” he said. “Let us put an end to the teaching and preaching of- hate and evil and violence. Let us turn away from the fanlatics of the far left and the far right, from the apostles of bitterness and bigotry, from* those defiant erf law, and those who pour venom into our nation’s bloodstream.” Then, in an eloquent climax at the end of his speech, Johnson quoted the lyrics from “America the Beautiful,” “On this Thanksgiving eve,” he said, “as we gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing, let us unite in those familiar and cherished words: “ ‘America, America, God shed His grace on thee, “ ‘And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea’.” November Meeting Held By Cub Pack Cub Scout pack 3062 held their November meeting Thursday at Southeast elementary school. Cubmaster Frank Lybarger opened the meeting. Den 4, under the direction of den mother Mrs. Steury, gave the opening ceremony with a cornet solo by cub Randy Roahrig followed by the pledge to the flag. Payment Os Bill Refused By Board The Adams county commissioners Tuesday refused to accept the bill submitted by Ashbauchers Tin Shop for repairs at the county home. Hie commissioners had disallowed the claim several weeks ago and requested an Itemized statement from Ashbauchers. Yesterday they said that the bill submitted was not sufficiently itemized. The work on the smokestack at the county home had been done, through Ashbauchers, by the Schust company of Fort Wayne. The bill included only items for material and labor. The commissioners phoned Ashbauchers yesterday and requested a bill which would include the hourly wage rate of the laborers on the project and the number of hours worked.
