By HORTENSE MYERS United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Before Oct. 31, Diana Groover seemed to her elders to have notiiing on her mind more serious than whether she would drop her baton as she m’arched with the Pittsboro High School band. Today—well, let the friends and neighbour who are responsible for this story tell it. Hendricks County Circuit Court Judge Richard Groover, her uncle, recalled the hours of tragedy that brought the carefree blonde drum majorette to the sudden maturity of “woman of the home” left motherless by the Oct. 31 explosion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. 1 To him, it seemed the training which his brother, Bob and his wife, Lois, had given to their two daughters had much to do with the fact Diana was able to pick up the tremendous burden suddely left to her. Father Hurt Badly Lois was killed in the explosion. Her husband was badly hurt and is expected to remain

hospitalized for many weeks. J “They were just nice people who lived nice, ordinary lives,’’ i the judge said. “Diana is 16 and > her sister Kaye Ann is 11. They . have been active in church as- i fairs. Diana’s a drum major- 1 ette with the Pittsboro High . School band and the younger girl pays a flute.” \ Groover recalled that both Lois and Bob were born in Hen- , dricks County, were married 22 years ago, and were active in , the Pittsboro Methodist Church. , Lois was working' as a ward secretary at Indianapolis Meth- i odist Hospital when she was > killed. Dr. O. T. Seamahorn, the fam- 1 ily doctor, remarked thdt “Di- ' ana sure grew up fast.” He mentioned that Bob Groover’s ‘ injured arm is “his mailbox 1 arm.” The injured man was a , rural mail carrier. , Diana Was Carefree Mrs. Sterling Hollingsworth, a i neighbor of the Bob Groovers, , remembered seeing the family going out together to their var- 1 ious activities and coming home. 1 “Diana was so carefree. You’d think her only worry was ‘ whether she would drop her ba- ’ ton. Now she’s standing up bet- ( ter than anyone else under this , tragedy,” she said. Pittsboro was hard hit by the , Coliseum blast. Felix... Broyles, , also was killed, and his wife Louise, the postmaster, was < hurt, in addition to the Groov- ■ ers. “Diana went to Mr. Broyles’ funeral in the morning and her mother’s in the afternoon,” Mrs. Hollingsworth recalled. “I couldn’t have done that. I’<m so proud to know someone like Diana, and Kaye Ann and Bob. They have taught me a lot. “Teen-agers can’t stand up under something like this unless they have had training,” the neighbor continued. “I think Diana’s behavior is a wonderful tribute to her mother.” - Mrs. Hollingsworth’s thoughts turned to the families of the others killed in the explosion. “Perhaps there are lessons to come out of this for others, all over the state, who must stand up and take a blow like this and go on.” “I don’t know what the lesson is but this has made me do a lot of thinking. I keep remembering the doctors at the Coliseum saying the scene was worse than war and it reminds me of a German girl I knew.— She had lived through the bombings and persecutions of World War II and she used to say the American people do not know the first, thing about war.” Mrs. Hollingsworth added “Maybe this is the way we know what would happen if war came to us.” rw z.-. v ...J CJX Ij ■i * 8 li -* w > < ;3 l . , 1 i *1 3 TOP MAN—CoI.
